A GAME OF CRUEL INTENTIONS

A GAME OF CRUEL INTENTIONS

A Poem by andrew mitchell

There are thirty-two pieces on the board
To engage in battle, they move toward.
A battle of wits to remain in the game
No prisoners are taken to achieve fame;

To capture the king, victory is assured;
No room for complacency on the board.
And in black or white they move to fight,
For no piece is left, out of one's sight.

Offensive, defensive all take part
Depending on whether you had a good start.
Sacrifices are made to protect the king;
Black or white only one will win.

As manoeuvres quicken for the kill
Putting to test the strength of wills.
Queens, bishops move to strike;
Pawns are expendable in their plight.

Tactics, plans all in disarray
As the enemy's front starts to invade,
And when castles and queen end their fate;
Victory is won, the king is checkmate.

Like a fox on the run,
The king is hunted down
Chased to every corner
 By the enemy's hounds.

Yes, chess is hardly a friendly game :) It's uncanny how in lots of cases it's like life and love. Well played, Andrew!
