A Close Moment

A Close Moment

A Story by Alyssa Carlstrom

"I feel so safe with you," Kate said. She loved the softness of Nathan's sweatshirt against the side of her face, so she nudged her cheek at his shoulder. Kate was curled up in a ball in his lap, his arms surrounding her. Both sat on a small, cramped couch.
"Good, that means I'm doing my job right."
She smiled and closed her eyes. Nathan cherished the feeling of holding her so close, and he knew she could never get enough of it. Every time they sat like this, it was as if time stood still.
The phone rang, sending Kate into curiousity. Would Nathan ruin the mood and get up to get it? Her heart beated and she was sure Nathan could her its fast thuds. She was touched when he let it ring. He stayed with her, not even turning his head toward the cordless. When it stopped, he said,
"Wanna know something I've never told anyone else?"
"Yes." she sighed with satisfaction and pressed her head into his shoulder, changing her position."It's a big secret. Are you sure you can keep it?"
"Of course," she said as she looked up at him.
"I love you."
Her breath caught and her heart stopped. Nathan saw the awe in her expression.
"Are you shocked?"
"No, because I'm in love with you, too." she kissed him and returned to her normal position. He stroked his fingers through her soft hair and closed his eyes.
