Double Dutch

Double Dutch

A Poem by alternative_be

A rant about prejudice and racism

"

Double Dutch

My love speaks Dutch as Dutchmen do
I speak Dutch as the Flemish do

Together we became one
Along the meandering path, we strolled together
Now, I am able to speak Dutch as Dutchmen too

What is it to you bigots?
I like speaking Dutch as Dutchmen do
I do not need subtitles, some Flemish pretend
They really do

Hate all people that do not speak Flemish
The way they do
Cultivate gibberish dialects
Leaving all others puzzled
People do need subtitles

Deciphering their near to foreign accent
Pretending that their dialect
Equals any top intermediate language
Sometimes they take pride in being called ‘Texans of Europe’
Well … ‘Rednecks of Belgium’
You might be surprised
What people really think of … YOU!

:)

Ranting is the best part of writing :) Some of my short stories are rants as well.

It is a well proven message nonetheless, and it is, in a way, supposed to open the eyes of those being ranted on.

To no longer hate, but to understand, and be open.

Well established message.

I love this piece :)

I have long known what an issue language is in Belgium...but your poem makes is real, more than just a story in an (English) newspaper about this or that flag flying and maps of how the country is divided linguistically. It is also a fascinating read as it shows how language, which we use to communicate and, usually, draw closer, can also be a cause of great misunderstanding and hatred. I have also heard of Belgium being described as the cockpit of Europe with many wars being faught there. Your poem catches how there is a linguistic faultline running through this part of Europe with the north on one side and the south on the other...or so it seems to this Englishman!

What a powerful and witty rant it is... I can not stand prejudice, why can't everyone realize we all have our ways in cultures but there is plenty of room for all and we can teach one another things, and in the end we all bleed red.

you spoke directly and with conviction.
Wonderful job.

I really liked the first two stanzas of this poem, because they are sweet and clever and nice..

I appreciate the rest of the poem for its subject matter, but the first two really got me. they could almost stand by themselves and be a completely different poem and people would still like it.
