Inspired by the growing violence in our big cities...

Prayer

Dear Saint Nicolas
On the 8th day of Creation
Adam and Eve
Were the only pair
Of the Human Kind

Though tempted
By the vicious snake
They went and multiplied
As ordered by a Higher Force
Their offspring being in demand

Created to the image of
The vengeful Force
Even their sons
Cursed by the
Survival of the fittest

Set the tone
For violent mayhem
In the name of the Higher Force
Sending his blessing
For He is the One
The growing Flock

Has to follow in
Order to be lead into
Temptation, following
The rat’s path, fastening
Into a race

The flock cannot escape
Destined to be part
Of the Human Race
Forever multiplying till
The Day has come

They even fail
To fit into the picture
Of violence and mayhem
Were Survival is no option
Only Murder and Rage
Prevail in the Cage

It is not my habit to be inspired by the Bible or by Nicolas (Coppola) Cage for that matter, but both gave me the images I needed to express myself.

Very neat miss Hendricks I love the mood and the scene you have placed in this St. Nicolas is one saint I know little about but I know a lot about Saint Thomas, but that's another story. I love the way you wright its nice and clean and you use so much of you brain to tell a story/poem in so little words.

Thanks for posting

Very true. Now a days all we ever really have is God.

Brutally honest ~ which a lot of writers are fearful of. You expressed your point clearly, from a different angle than most probably would.

I love the tone of your poetry and this one in particular: gritty and ethereal at the same time. Biblical imagery (which is the ethereal) with urban imagery (rats in a cage). I am not religious at all so I'm afraid some of the references are lost on me, but you still convey the emotion of senseless violence and the inability to escape from that cage. Again, very well written, you are probably my favorite poet on this site and I wonder if you are ever going to publish?

Some might call yo a bit cynical with this one, but then they would tend to be the less open-minded ones that refuse to accept thoughts other than their own. I like the Nicolas twist you used. It really works on many levels. I guess what I like best about it is you cut through all the fluffy crap people use to hide life's cruelty and lack of caring.

Very well done.
