A Lost Purpose

A Lost Purpose

A Poem by Kelsey

What do you call a bird
that never sings?
What do you call a bird
that has lost its wings?
A lost soul,
A questioned purpose.

What do you call a guitar
with broken strings?
What is a guitar
that never sings its lovely tune
for all to hear?
A lost melody,
A questioned purpose.

What do you call a poet
that never writes?
What is it that tells this poet
everything is alright?
Certainly not words,
for this poet is at a loss.
This poet's own words,
are this poet's own thoughts.
Unspoken, unheard,
Never to be known.

A poet with no purpose,
A guitar playing no sound.
The only thing it has,
Is something it hasn't found.
A bird with no wings,
No voice of its own.
This bird is me,
flying aimlessly,
my wings tucked to my side.
No longer perched on a branch,
I must decide to fly.

I disagree that this poet is at a loss. A bird leaving its nest, time to fly or dive, and find its purpose. most people think when you take flight you already know your purpose, know where youre going, but its simply not true. you take flight in search, finding out where you belong. whether it be a poet, a guitar player or (using a birds song) a singer, thats just things to find out in life. this is probably senseless drivel and im overanalyzing into something of which you had no intenton (as i tend to do) but i see this as a look at life itself, and where one might find her place to fit in. that being said, untuck those beautiful wings and fly as high as you can reach. theres something up there for you and its just waiting for you. even if i am completely wrong on the meaning within this, its still beautifully done, which doesnt need to be said, since it was written by you.

Wonderful, just wonderful. What sounds, at first glance, to be a dark or depressing poem is actually quite upbeat and inspirational.

I don't know if it was intended this way, but to me, it has two meanings. On one hand, you could be talking about a poet who has literally never written any poetry, and they finally decide to start writing. On the other hand, you could be talking about a poet like myself -- someone who has been writing for a long time, but has never shared their poetry with anyone (thus, it appears to the world that they never write), and they finally decide that it is time to fly -- to take their writing, embrace it, show it to the world, and say "This is me".

Lovely. The imagery set forth by this poem is amazing and it speaks a lot of the person who wrote it. Truly we all must find purpose in this world, otherwise we are simply hollow shells, wasting the reasons for our existence. But at some point in time, we have to make the "decision" to fly. I love this piece. As always, keep up the great work and I'll be reading it with joy. Thank you again. ^^

Thank you. (:
Title fits perfectly. Sometimes titles represent a deeper meaning then the body shows. Wonderful poem, Hun. :)

Thank you so much. :)
I like the title. They come with practice and experience of personal choice. This was the best thing I've read of yours so far. Very bright questions posed.
