The Circus

The Circus

A Poem by Alma Miller

The circus

Was the talk

Of the town.

Massive

Mammals

With reptilian skin

And impossibly

Long

Noses

Carried various

Primates

In small suits made of

Leather.

The crunch of popcorn

The delicious taste

Of the fluffy

Pink

Melt-on-your-tongue

Sweets

Lured curious children and

Eager parents

Alike

To the massive red and yellow

Tent.

Magicians danced

Across wires,

And round little men

Flew out of cannons

Their long beards

Floating

Momentarily

Through the air

Like a type of strange

And mysterious

Bird.

It was always loud

It was always exciting

And it was always

Completely

Sold

Out.

When that place of magic

Of food and entertainment

And mystery

Came to town

No-one wanted

To miss it.

And so

They

Never

Did.

And the massive red and yellow tent

Like a smudge of color

On a dull

Dreary

Common canvas

Brought people from far

And from near

And it never knew

An empty

Seat.
