AdelineA Chapter by ally B.The hood of the red shiny car was burning against the back of my thighs and the hot California heat beat down on my already sweaty body, rendering my flimsy clothes useless. On both sides of me was barren desert and the occasional cactus or lonely coyote. One of my bony hands was raised to shield my eyes from the suns harsh rays, and the other was holding my backpack of the few belongings I owned. The damn car had broken down and sputtered to a stop where I was now sitting in the middle of the god-damn desert. I swept my golden blonde hair out of my face and walked back over to the drivers side bending in through the window and snatching my passport off the dashboard, it looks like walking was my only choice. So I started my lonely trek down the side of the highway the wind pushing me to and fro and causing the fabric of my black sundress to flap in the wind and my hair to frame my face in the most irritating way possible. Of course, the black heels I was wearing probably weren't helping either, but I couldn't completely abandon fashion; after all I had grown up on the upper east side of Manhattan New York. It was in my second nature.. and in my trust fund to wear heels. My steps are precise and exact and my hand swings by my side my face lifted not backing down, and my pale blue eyes staring straight into the pulsating heat waves that lie ahead. I could care less I had to walk down a highway in the burning heat, check it off my bucket list I was slowly completing. The puttering sounds of an old pickup truck sound in my ears and I turn around to see exactly that, an old gray pickup truck that looks more rust then metal. My eyes scan over the front to only find one passenger, a young looking male who seems to have quite boring features, but I couldn't see much yet. I turn back around and keep walking, but I can still hear the truck behind me. I wasn't scared, no not at all; I felt the adrenaline running through my body like it was my blood. I was excited for what was to come even though I didn't know it yet. The truck slowly creeps up next to me and he rolls down the window “ I know you saw me, are you going to reject the offer of a ride?” A deep toe curling masculine voice calls through the window and I risk a glance to examine his features more closely before turning my head to look at him. “ That depends, are you a serial killer who goes out searching for girls on the side of the street?” I say giving him a sarcastic smirk. His perfectly defined dark brown eyebrows raise with slight surprise but he quickly suppresses his reaction before his lips curl into a stunningly white smile that seemed to reach 1000 mile radius “ I see I've caught a snarky one.” He finally responds and to his amusement my own eyebrows raise “ Is this a fishing game to you mister ‘ I caught a snarky one’” I say doing my best to keep down a smile. He rolls his eyes “ just get in the god-damn car, I'm wasting gas.” So I get in the car and set my shoes on the dashboard and bring my feet into my lap. He looks over at me every few seconds before his eyes land on my shoes and he practically falls out of the car “ well, seems like our snarky princess, is actually a rich snarky princess.” He mutters. I roll my eyes again. “well it seems like captain obvious is doing what he's best at.. you wanna take a guess… no, alright then ill tell you. Pointing out the obvious.” A voice says from the back and I turn to be face to face with a younger boy, around twelve with freckles dotting his nose and his curly red hair sticks up everywhere like a stop sign. I would definitely stop If I saw those mass of curls. “ Those are custom made, it even has her name…” the voice continues as the kid squints his eyes to focus on the tiny writing etched into the leather heels, that was in-fact my name in my custom made heels “ Adeline Bowman.” He finally finishes and crosses his arms and leans back satisfied with his actions. © 2015 ally B. |
