46. In Which Dr. Spencer Reid Proves Scully and Mulder Wrong and Emily Prentiss is Doubtful

*In Salt Lake City, Utah*

 

*With Reid, Prentiss, Scully and Mulder*

 

*Scully and Mulder are driving the SUV while Reid and Prentiss sit in the backseat. They arrive at the crime scene and get out of the SUV, dodging the crime tape. They approaching the river, and Mulder crouches down by it*

 

Mulder: Has anyone touched the water?

 

Police Man #1: No, why?

 

Mulder: *mutters* Just a theory I have…

 

Scully: *crouches down beside him* What have you got?

 

Mulder: *reaches in to touch the water* *gets nothing* I dunno. Just something.

 

Scully: What were you thinking?

 

Mulder: Could the water have been like acid, almost?

 

Scully: What do you mean?

 

Mulder: Could it have penetrated the skin and filled up the lungs WITHOUT flooding the mouth?

 

Scully: Again, impossible.

 

Mulder: Really, with the things you see, I’m surprised you still believe in the word “impossible”.

 

Scully: There can’t be an X-File for everything.

 

Mulder: There’s an X-File for this.

 

Scully: If there is, we might need to get the BAU off the case and handle it ourselves.

 

Mulder: *looks at her and grins* What are you saying?

 

Scully: *hits him playfully in the shoulder* Shut up.

 

*Reid and Prentiss are watching them*

 

Reid: Actually, they’re quite cute.

 

Prentiss: Really? I never would have noticed. *dryly*

 

Reid: What do you have against them?

 

Prentiss: They hunt down ALIENS.

 

Reid: So? Didn’t you believe in aliens when you were a child?

 

Prentiss: Keyword, CHILD.

 

Reid: Maybe they’re still children at heart. I know I am.

 

Prentiss: Yes, we know you are.

 

Reid: *taps Mulder’s shoulder* Actually, your theory can’t be accurate. There’s not acid that can penetrate the human skin without leaving at least a mark. And when you felt the water, you would have felt something go into your system if so.

 

Mulder: As I said, a theory.

 

Prentiss: *snorts* An alien-based theory.

 

Mulder: *stands* What, you have something against aliens?

 

Prentiss: No, no. I just stopped believing in them thirty years ago.

 

Mulder: Well I haven’t.

 

Prentiss: Good for you.

 

Scully: Guys. Mulder may be on to something. Dr. Reid, could you tell your TA to check out these acids?

 

Reid: I’ve read the acid book. I know I’m right.

 

Scully: You couldn’t have memorized it.

 

Reid: I have.

 

Scully: Impossible.

 

Prentiss: Believe me, he has.

 

Mulder: *gives her a look* and YOU don’t believe in aliens.

 

Prentiss: I have, on many occasions, proved that Dr. Spencer Reid is a robot.

 

Reid: HEY!
