2013: A Good Year to Quit My Job

2013: A Good Year to Quit My Job

A Story by E.A. Rubin
"

This is a story I wrote specifically for an assignment which instructed me to write how and why I would quit my job in 2013. An editor rejected it, citing that I did not follow instructions.

"
I have decided to quit my job in 2013.  I am sick of going to my place of employment 40 hours a week only to have to deal with difficult and ridiculous people.  However, before I can give my two weeks notice, I will need to get myself out of debt.  My previous goal was to get out of debt in 2013, but now I will get out of debt and quit my job.

So, how I will get out of debt is really simple in theory, but complicated emotionally.  Getting out of debt involves selling some things that are very important to me.  First, I will sell my collectible lunchboxes. I will hire a professional auction company to sell my valuable lunchboxes.  Once that task is completed, I will still need to sell all of my unnecessary worldly possessions until I have enough money to get myself completely out of debt.  I think the best way to sell these would be using an online auction site.  I will not offer free shipping.    Instead of using auction style, I will sell them for a fixed cost.

After I have sold unnecessary possessions, I will sell my home.  I will use the home equity to buy an old motel in the mountains. Living in the motel, I will make the internet available to travelers.  This will attract guests to our exclusive resort.  I will keep my bicycle, but I will sell all of my motor vehicles.  Everyone needs friends and family.  Keeping in touch with my friends will be easy through the internet.  Adult family members will either work and live in the mountain motel with me or go find another way to survive.  My minor children will be home schooled at the mountain retreat where we will happily reside.

One thing I will do after I quit my job is to become a lot more careful with my money.  I will budget myself.  I will buy gift cards online for less than the card’s actual value. I will shop less.

When I quit my job, I will be losing that wonderful benefits package, including my health insurance. I will no longer have to pay health insurance premiums.  Riding my bike in the spring and summer and walking in the winter, I will improve my health, so I will have less of a need for healthcare.

Author's Note

The editor who rejected the story said it was supposed to be more about the job I wanted to quit, but the instructions specifically said "tell how and why you will quit your job this year". The only reason I wrote this was to get paid, and that did not happen.

I like all the different ways suggested to get out of debt. The editor probably wanted to know more about your job--the company you work for and specifically what you did. But it's not a bad story.

In my lifetime, I have probably written more words than I ever spoke aloud. Over the last few months, I took a hiatus in publishing what I've written, except my posts on social networks. In my spare.. more..
