Lessons

A Poem by Ruairidh

We can never know the terror of the First World War,

Where men died in labyrinthine fields of France,

Where soldiers of every ilk were gassed,

Their flesh dying before they had the chance.

All we know is that no concrete lesson

Was learnt from instruction in that dug-up hell;

Death continues its elementary schooling;

We give it space to teach in, and to tell.
