While the guard was shutting off the light, Rachel collected her belonging. She
knew the drill. Pack her sleeping bag, satchel, smokes, wallet, jacket and
boots, all under 3 minutes; a new record. “If you
need a place to stay, there’s a homeless shelter on 54th and-“ “I’m not
homeless.” “Well then
are you living in a sleeping bag behind a department store?” “I don’t
need to explain myself to you,” Rachel turned and walked the familiar path back
to her mother’s apartment. She put a cigarette to her lips, lit it, drew in a
