A Lesson on Adjectives

A Lesson on Adjectives

A Poem by Allison Terranova
"

I'm tired of people throwing words around

"

Who’s on TV now talking about addiction to drugs, sex and violence?

Our lives revolve around a mirror

An image we need to obtain

It’s becoming a sickness, nay, a disease,

Or like bugs crawling underneath our skin

Lines carved into us to let them out

A skeleton with a soul and a smile on its face

“how sad” ,“how tragic”, “she was perfect the way she was”

But all she heard was about the new fad diets, the thigh gaps, the abs lacked, the spine protruding from her back

“Try this diet, I’m sure you will like it when your stomach growls for attention living on 100 calories or less!”

That poor girl’s life was a mess.

From home, to the hospital, to six feet underground all just because she wanted to lose a couple of pounds.

The TV said so.

She thought she’d be happy.

She’d recover like those celebrities that told her to have hope for a better tomorrow but she just didn’t know that today would be yesterday’s last tomorrow.

Now she’s on TV but she’s not talking of recovery.

She’s bringing tears to people’s eyes

as they read her obituary.

You may wonder

Well why didn’t she just start eating again?

Why didn’t she just hold her food down?

Maybe because her mental illness was a joke and the words just thrown around

Mental illnesses are not adjectives

Just because today was a bad day, doesn’t mean you’re depressed

Haven’t eaten in a couple of hours thinking, “maybe now I’ll fit into that dress”

“My mom yelled at me, she’s so bipolar”

“That’s retarded”

“My OCD is kicking in”, “I swear I have ADD”

“My heart races in social situations, must be anxiety”

This ignorance or lack of education has caused our society to ignore this epidemic

All I ask is for you to be cautious of the words you use

Educate yourself

Because mental illnesses are serious too

You wouldn’t use “cancer” as an adjective

Now would you?
