The Rooms

The Rooms

A Story by Allison Price
"

When the rooms go dark, what do you see?

"

There are moments when I simply walk into a dark empty room, no light can been seen, and hardly a man-made sound can be heard. I sit, painted in ebony, I look everywhere and nowhere. A moment of peace, for silence to be the only thing that whispers into my body, is not what I seek. While being blind, I allow myself to see my thoughts. To hear everything that I am thinking, wishing, and dreaming of. Day time too often puts thought and ideas on hold, and pushes them to the forgotten parts of the mind, but here, in this room, they are given full attention. At last, with open eyes, I can hear my heart and mind at once. Together they tell stories, and paint pictures. In the night, the two are no longer at war. I become part of my surroundings and allowed to simply listen. As time passes these moments shorten. People become afraid to listen and wish to keep their mind and heart at war, for when the noise is gone they do not wish to hear the stories the two have to tell. Slowly the silence if filled. Not with the wind or light rhythmic breathing, but with the sharp humming of machine. Soon all the silence is gone, and my heart and mind no longer wish to speak as one. Daylight becomes longer, people fear what comes after, so they ignite the world. Illuminate the rooms.

Beautiful piece, I love the lines "I look everywhere and nowhere" and "At last, with open eyes, I can hear my heart and mind at once." So true and so fantastically written. Great work!
