3 fears about screen time for kids? And why they're not true

A Story by David Allen

Mobile phones and smart devices have become a necessity of the modern life. Today almost every household has a smart device with mobile phone capabilities. Through advancement in science and technology, internet enabled computing devices are available at cheap prices and almost everywhere in the world. This innovative revolution has transformed the way people used to communicate with each other.

However, at the same time, this facility has become a problem for the humans as well. With millions of apps and software to download and play with and 24/7 availability of internet and social media, people can hardly get their hands away from these devices. Checking their phones every few minutes to look out for latest updates and notifications has become a routine.

Apart from the adults, children too have become addicted to these devices and gadgets. The technology savvy generation of the current age can operate and play such computing hardware with ease and comfort for long hours in a day. Many parents also find it comforting to keep their kids engaged in tablets and mobiles for many hours and stay put in one place.

But a large number of people find it disturbing to see their children so much addicted to smart gadgets and devices. They may themselves use these technological products 50 times in a day, but when it comes to their children they are found nervous.

There is a huge debate in the world about the effectiveness and disadvantages of these tech gadgets in the hands of young children. Are they actually destroying our upcoming new generation? Can their excessive usage ruin the health and mental capabilities of a child? Should parents be fearful about their usage in the hands of their children?

These and many more such questions often herald in the minds of the parents who find it hard to keep their children away from long hours of screen time. Below is a description of three major fears about screen time for kids along with the reason why they may be untrue.

1.      Tech gadgets and screens are passive and restrict free movement:

This is one of the biggest problems that parents face while their kids use mobile devices and gadgets. They continue concentrating on the screens and do not move around as much as they would in a normal circumstance. This may be true for to some extent but not fully. According to scientific research, the online content that children view is very inspirational and encourages active participation of children in many cases. Such online content and programs can help children learn about new things in lesser time and effort.

2.

Computer games are a waste of time:

One of the largest tech industries in the world today is of gaming. Millions of online games and gaming apps are available for the users to download play. Many of these are highly addictive and users can spend hours on them without a break. Parents believe that these games are distracting for their children and waste their precious time. However, scientific studies and research shows results that playing video games help enhance the cognitive and reactive skills of the children. They are motivated to solve problems and face challenges as they progress in the game. Strategic online games polish the mental skills of the children and trigger the thinking process and mental activity.

3.      Screen lead to the isolation of children:

Parents fear that when children spend long hours watching the screens of these tablets and smart devices, their social skills are compromised. Instead of going out playing, talking with other children and socializing in general, the children spend their time on social media and internet games. They get used to making online friends rather than real ones. To overcome this problem of isolation, the parents should always talk to their children about what they watch and do on the device. If they are playing games, involve yourself in the same to create a family environment. Make the screen time as much interactive for the kids as possible.

Final thoughts:

Living in the age of information and technology one cannot isolate your child from the screens of these tech gadgets and devices. They will definitely remain a big part of your child life no matter how much you restrict it. So, it is important that you dig into the benefits of these screens rather than getting fearful about the negatives that they offer.
