a long echo

a long echo

A Poem by Alfred Kukitz
"

sixties

"

a long echo

sixties
crowd roars
for, against, scorekeepers toil for more
vietnam, JFK, MLK, JFK, killed for
what was once called America

billy joel sings, crosby, still, nash & young
harmonize our discontent
woodstock the craze of a peaceful world
4 dead in O hi O
fathers taking sons & daughters to the concerts of our days
the long echo of generations hear those songs for years
we will all sing those rambunctious days
filled with soul in every which way

While the sixties was well before my time, Al, its reach and ongoing relevance is undeniable.

It always amazes that amongst all the turmoil and craziness of the decade the world was given the foundations of so many social movements that reshaped western societies even till this day. And the music? It speaks for itself. Just a classic era.

I imagine it was both a blessing and a curse to have lived through this decade. And in words like you have written here, it's lessons can be absorbed by those of us born after its time.

A very nostalgic and relevant write, Alfred. Nicely done.

This reminded me of the first time I heard the song by Dion, "Abraham, Martin & John". I had to special order it for a customer, and called a local radio station and requested to hear it.

You truly gave this piece a pulse, Alfred!

And after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14th, it seems this new generation is going to pick up the banner and be socially active too. I remember those days well, Al. "4 dead in O hi O...." Lydi**

The echoes are heard loud and clear in those moments of history that shaped a nation and a generation even the ones to come. You bring it all into focus with ease of pen and touch of nostalgia. Marvelous you are.
