Saigon Was Won

Saigon Was Won

A Poem by Alfred Kukitz
"

the victory that never happened

"

Saigon Was Won

“Captain Jack will take you to your special island”

We were all well, well enough to celebrate

Saigon, heroes among south vietnamese folks,

heroes among ourselves, our country and

the folks we left behind.

but before the brawl of joy

we bowed deeply,

deeply into our own souls, some cried,

some fell to their knees in proud

and sad remembrance of those who died.

you could feel the silence escaping out over

the countryside, rolling down mountains,

within the mouths of the former north Vietnamese people.

we tailed it, followed it all the way to the sky and back again.

One Our Father seem to overcome us all.

We prayed like little boys in our first communion.

All dressed in white, all feeling the holiness of our souls

The air ripped, pot smoked the air and lungs of soldiers,

screams of joy echoed!

Saigon was won!

There is the thought that the only victory won in war is peace. But the fables we tell those we send to battle … boys better off discovering their divinity.

Thanks Jacob! I must have been sitting in this song for years before the story materialized.

Take care!

SILVER!

Glad to see you are among us. I miss the flavor of your soul my friend. Far to often you are missing from all the folks who love you and miss your beautiful poetry. Thank you Sir!

Thanks Kelly! I was listening to Billy Joel yesterday and it finally struck me. I always lingered that there was something there behind that song. I finally found it.

Love,
Al

this is one of your best, Al.

you capture that feeling, that truth that even though it seemed such a waste of lives...there were small victories over there, that meant a lot to some folks...us, them....
some joy among all the craziness.

Indeed well... so very well written. You placed each word as a poem to itself and every line breathed heavily and for I moment I thought I felt this poem's soul.
