A River of Youth

A River of Youth

A Poem by Alfred Kukitz
"

It brings back memories

"

We moseyed on down to the river
The sound of current filling our ears
The wetness gathered around our imaginations,
Strokes in the swimming act soon became
A means of prayer
We felt the water tumble like a barrel down a hill
We stayed submerged for minutes while
the earth seemed to move away
When we rose from the shallow depths of river
We were taken by a faint din
Our surroundings became an Eden
We knew our youth would begin.

We did a night time swim naked. There were seven or eight of us. What a riot! Thanks for visiting Moon!

Free water swimming, nothing like it for folk not close to the sea.

Not quite a river for me to start, but submersion for sure. Two swimming pools. From one changing room - to shallow water; from the other changing room to six feet water. I was five and half - already aware of how to move in water - jumped into second pool and swam for the first time. Horrified then surprised my older sisters - and self. What could have left me traumatised led to a love of swimming.

That sensation of panic bursting.. bursting.. into light and then the support and feeling of of water still thrills me. Your writing rekindles memories. Thank you!

For me it was the Lehigh, swimming, paddling a raft, riding rapids. I couldn't say how many times I embraced that river. Thanks for visiting Jacob!

i wish we could go back there....this reminds me of Vermont and when we used to swim in Mad River...the coldest water i ever swam in...and Vermont always felt like Eden to me.
