Space Walk

Space Walk

A Poem by Alfred Kukitz
"

What a time to lose mental stability.

"

He was in space,
Outer space.
Once an astronaut in his mind
but now he was gone
floating forever in Alzheimer disease or
was it some other malady?
Wondering in the only way
the disease allows you to wonder.
Lost.
With all the evidence pointing to
A man, a living man, surrounded
By dark matter, blackness,
weightlessness, stars,
his suit the only thing preventing him from death
floating, floating further from everything
Like so many here on Earth.

Very powerful and a great ending.

Thanks Norman! As a nurse I worked with many of these patients. I always accepted what they said, conversed empathically and pleasantly. I often found these patients to enjoy the banter without reason's presence.

This was such a graphic portrayal of senility. I have seen it so often.Although disturbing and traumatic for those close to them, the only consolation is that the the "sufferer" is usually unaware.
A moving and sensitively written poem. Thank you.

Thank you all for visiting. My mom too is inching toward that fate. 87 years old and her life wasn't so great.

Such a tragic tale… a very sad read.

Puts me much in mind of my gran, who languished 10 years in a nursing home with senile dementia. I visited her there almost daily, and watched as everyone and everything was forgotten… except her Jack. She never forgot her Jack, and hurried on to join him once he was gone (they were the topic of my poem, "Move On… Move On… "
