Sand City

Sand City

A Poem by Laz K.

Though we cough and

Burn, with squinted eyes

We walk through fire,

Press on, press on,

And never tire.

We pitched our tent and

Set up camp on a

Mountain of hopelessness, but

They tell us to stay strong,

And they can’t be wrong.

Our hearts are fierce and

Filled to the brim with pride,

One day, you'll see, we’ll make an

Oasis with all the tears

We make each other cry.

Our life is an hourglass

With towering castles of

Sand we make, teeming with

Scorpions and poisonous snakes.

Flickering neon lights

Blink dumbly above, while

The wind whistles a sad tune,

And scatters our dreams of love.

This is poignant and beautiful. That opening though...I was up all night coughing. Been sick for about six weeks now, first flu and then RSV or a similar respiratory infection followed right on its heels. So now I'm popping the doctor's patent pills and trying to get better. I made the statement recently that I wished we could see the inner beings of one another rather than the outer shell. Pride of any sort is evil. And I'm not speaking of self-respect or respect for others. THOSE are great things. But self-absorption is the epitome of vapidity. I believe the greatest honor is to serve others in whatever capacity we are able. But when someone is all wrapped up in pride they can't serve. They're more likely wondering why someone else isn't catering to their every whim. Love this write! F.

Your eloquent words drive home the point that we haven’t done a good job. We’ve taken shortcuts that have harmed the universe and ourselves. The chaos and division reinforces that. Enjoyed, Mary
