Echoes of Eden

Echoes of Eden

A Poem by Laz K.

Over and over again

The same place,

The same game,

The same search for

The same proof for

The same claim.

Déjà vu with a twist:

I’m you, and you’re me,

We’re still entangled in

The same web, tied to

The same ball with

The same chains.

We look, but we don’t see:

It’s the same garden,

The same snake,

The same fruit on

The same tree,

Offering the same deal:

Your soul for a bite,

For just a taste, then

The same judge above

And the same blame.

The swords still burn with

The same flames,

We’re out, we leave,

We can’t stay.

It must be wrong, but

I can't get enough of you,

So let's put the lights out, and

How about part two?

"I'm a big believer in truth. But I'm also a huge fan of justice." Superman from The Justice League

I'm a big fan of personal responsibility and accountability and I hold myself to the highest standards I can, constantly reviewing and revisiting my decisions as more information is made available. I'm certainly not a fan of the "blame game" because it doesn't help solve problems and detracts from the ability to improve situations through a "scapegoat" mentality. Adam blamed Eve, Eve blamed the snake and the snake didn't have a leg to stand on. Eve didn't have to listen to the snake and Adam didn't have to listen to Eve. That's where the rubber meets the road; not in "blame" but in personal responsibility and accountability. Liberty and justice for all. That's what I'm pledged to. But justice must be tempered with mercy or it isn't justice. That's why, in court, lawyers always present mitigating and aggravating circumstances in the judgement phase of trial proceedings. Knowing motive and circumstance may not justify an action but they can help us understand those actions in the context of our shared humanity. A man who steals bread because he is hungry or his child is hungry is just as guilty of theft as the man who embezzles millions from his corporation. Stealing is stealing. But should they both receive the same punishment as the man who robs a bank at gunpoint? Perspective. We'll never get back our lost innocence or find the gate back into Eden. But maybe we can find a way to come to grips with our own humanity through shared dialogue and discourse. F.

Yes, to hell with those fig leaves.
Maybe we shouldn't be doing this...but before we stop, let's have another go.
