Glass Cage

Glass Cage

A Poem by Laz K.

Slippered feet shuffle from wall to wall

Resting on weathered milestones

Left like breadcrumbs around the house

A photograph, a book, a broken

Record playing familiar

Discordant tunes, a bottle of good

Champagne sitting on a dusty

Shelf that gave up long ago

Waiting for that “special day”

Trembling hands dare not touch it

Now, lest they spill bitterness and

Rue all over the faded rug.

Stiff knees and old furniture

Take turns to creak and sigh

Knitted scarves and minds

Slowly unravel and weave

Cobwebbed dreams in the night

Behind glass doors, a painted china

Bird with a shattered glass heart

Broods over eggs that never hatched

Eyes and window panes

Fog over in the cold of winter

Wrinkled lids fall like a

Curtain on an empty stage

The last lights flicker, burn out, and

From behind the glass case

A bird takes wing and slips through

The invisible bars of its old cage.

This is such a poignant write of missed opportunities. I wanted to tell her to crack open that champagne bottle and enjoy its contents before it is too late. Life slips by and the older we get, the faster the time appears to go. The ending I understood to be a positive. Escaping the cage is a triumph. Visual piece here Laz.

Thank you, Dave.
eggs that never hatched...loves that never came to fruition...it can surely put us in a certain cage of heart hibernation...we can brood, become unraveled, slip behind a glass of self-reflection...of self-discovery and understanding, and then just as suddenly those bars are no longer there, and we become alive enough to fly once again.
love this piece...metaphorically exceptional.
