24. Fearless
I FOLLOWED THE NURSE AS SHE LED TO THE ROOM. I LIED down and tried to listen to her instructions, though I can’t keep my focus. All I have in mind now is that I need to be fearless, to save Adam’s life.
Before as a kid, I’m really scared of injections and needles. I stare at the needles, though I know I can conquer my fears. The nurse said something I didn’t understand, so I just nodded. She brushed the cotton with the alcohol, and then she quickly put the needle. Suddenly, I can’t feel the pain, it’s like just nothing. I just stare at the blood coming from me to the bag. It’s like what I saw back there is scarier than this.
After I was finish, I went straight to where Nate and Shane are.
“Hey…” I said.
“Are you okay?” Shane asked.
“Yah… um Nate, could you continue your story?”
“Where am I?” Nate asked.
“The part where Paul saw me…”
“Oh yes… then obviously, he thought that you’re his girlfriend… so taking the girl he love will make Adam feel the same thing he’d felt a few years ago…”
“Oh… when did he go to Canada anyway?”
“About five years ago…”

“And he’s still on for his revenge?”
“Well, you see, I don’t think it’s just about that girl, since maybe he can be mature enough to forget about that… I remembered before that his parents always compare him to Adam… that Adam is better, nicer, more talented, smarter, more good looking… and we all know how that hurts…”
“Can’t he just forgive and forget? Besides, it’s not Adam’s fault that he’s better in Paul’s parent’s eyes…”
“That’s not that easy for him… he lived like that for almost his whole life, well, before…”
“Does Paul have a sibling?”
“Yes, but she’s in Russia that time… she’s already married…”
“Ah… um, how old is Paul now?”
“If I could remember, he should be twenty-three by now…”
“Oh… and he can’t forget about what happened a lot of years ago in that age? He should have already moved on by now…”
“I know…”
“Well, I guess he’ll never show up again…”
“Maybe…”
“What else did you read in his mind?”
“That’s all… I’m not a total mind reader you know…”
“Really…”
“Well, except to you… you’re so obvious…”
“Sure, whatever…”
After a few minutes, the doctor finally went out. “Good news, he’s stable now…” the doctor said approaching me. Wow, they’re fast.
“Can we see him now?” I asked.
“Of course…”
We headed to his room where Adam is sleeping. We just sat at the couch.
“Hey, you don’t want to go home first?” Shane asked.

“Um, maybe when he wakes up…”
“Okay… I’ll go home now…”
“Sure…”
“Is it okay to you Alyson if I come with Shane? I’m a little tired too…” Nate mumbled.
“Sure, fine… I can stay by myself…”
“Bye…” they said as they go out of the room.
I took off my stained jacket and put it beside Adam’s bag. I decided to take the chair and sat beside him. I’m getting tired too, but I don’t want to go home until I see him wake up, though the doctor said he’s okay, I just want to make sure. I decided to sleep, since he’s asleep as well. I held his one hand and put my head on my arms until I fell asleep.
I woke up, feeling something brushing to my hair. I quickly sat up straight and I can see that Adam is already awake.
“Hey, sorry if I woke you up…” Adam murmured.
“No, that’s okay…” I mumbled.
“So what are you still doing here?”
“I’m just watching you… why, you want me to go?” I stood up but he caught my hand.
“Of course not…”
I sat back. “So, are you okay now?”
“Yah, I can bear the pain…”
“Great…”
“Of course… it’s a great help that you’re here…”
“Sure, whatever you say…” I smiled a little. “What time is it anyway?”
“I don’t know…”
“Well, I need to go home first…”
“Oh… can’t you stay for just a little while?”
“Well…”
“Please…” he gave me his puppy dog eyes.
“Sure…”

“Great…” then he looked around a little. “Hey, you still have my bag?”
“Yah, there…” I pointed to the bag beside my jacket.
“Could you get it for me?”
“Sure…” I stood up and took his bag. “What are you looking for?”
“Um, can you find a small blue envelope?”
I searched his bag for the envelope until I found it. “Here… what’s with this?”
“Read it…”
“Did you write this?”
“Nope…”
I carefully opened the envelope, then took the letter inside:
Dear Alyson,
I’m so sorry on the trouble I cause to you and Adam. I already learned my lessons, and I can see on Adam’s eyes that he’s really in love with you… and on what you saw the other day, Adam is telling you the truth. It’s not his fault, I really went there on my lingerie, well, of course I have a long coat first, but that’s not important, and now, I’ll stop bugging you, I’m going back to China tomorrow, and I guess I won’t be back anymore. I can’t say you won the game, since you really don’t need to play along, since you’re already the only one on his heart anyway. Just take

good care of him for me. I really love him, but I know you two belong with each other, now I’m having my flashbacks on what I’ve done, and I can see how stupid and pathetic I had been. I’m so childish and just can’t accept the truth. And it’s okay if you don’t forgive me in all that I’ve done, besides, if I’m on your position, I can’t forgive myself too…

Tears started running down my eyes. I closed my eyes and quickly wiped it off, before I could be dramatic again. I can’t believe I didn’t trust him when he’s really telling the truth.
“Are you crying?” Adam asked.
“Um, no…” I wiped my eyes with my hand.
“Really…”
“There’s just something in my eye…”
“Really… that’s why it’s already red…”
“No it’s not… you’re such a liar…”
“So what does that says?”
“What?”
“The letter…”
“Oh…”
“You need to be back in earth again…”
“You haven’t read this yet?”
“Nope… Stephanie said I shouldn’t open it… that you’re the first who should read it…”

“I’m a good boy…”
“Really...”
“Of course…”
“So, why haven’t you given this to me before?”
“I have no time…’
“Sure you haven’t read this?”
“Yah…”
“Even just a little peek?”
“Of course…”
“Nothing important…” I smiled crookedly.
“Even just a clue…”
“Nope…”
“Please…”
“No need…”
“Just one clue…”
“Well…”
“I know that tone anywhere…”
“Um…”
“C’mon… you already said ‘well’…” he imitated my voice.
“Okay, because of this letter, I’m sure that I made the right decision…”
“Decision on what?”
“That I really should forgive you and I should have believed you…”
“Really… so are we…”
“Not yet…”
“Why?”
“I’m not ready…”
“C’mon, my life is short, I’m here lying at the hospital bed and you’re not yet ready?”
“Why, can’t a girl change her mind?”
“C’mon…”
“I don’t want to have any commitments first…”

“You don’t need to have any commitments…”
“Well…”
“You don’t feel the same way as before…” he looked away.
“Two years…”
“Is too long and you already forgot… of course…”
“I’m not saying that…”
“Then what are you saying?”
“That we just have to be friends first… to get to know each other…”
“C’mon… we’re in one band… we’ve dated for a year… what else do you want to know?”
“Why did you change your hairstyle?”
“Is that all? Because I want to follow my brother’s footsteps…”
“Really…”
“There… I answered your question…”
“One question is not enough for a yes…”
“You’re unfair…”
“What’s unfair to that?”
“Before you quickly said yes…”
“I made a wrong step back then…”
“What? Now you regret�"”
“I’m not saying that…”
“Then what are you saying?”
“Hey, I enjoyed Venice and Hawaii…”
“C’mon…”
“You’re so annoying you know…”
“Then I won’t stop until you finally say yes…”
“Give me a reason on why I should say yes…”
“Well…”
“See… you can’t even give me a reason…”
“Hey, I got one…”
“What?”
“Because you still love me back…”

“C’mon… you said you made the right choice on forgiving me�"”
I put my finger on the middle of his lips. “Could you stop chatting for a second?”
“No… well, until you say yes…” he took my hand.
“Hey, you’re becoming unfair as well…”
“How did I become unfair to that?”
“When Shane�"” then I stopped myself. “Never mind…”
“When Shane courted you, he said that he’ll wait for you forever… I said the same line three years ago… but now I realized that I can’t do that…”
“And why not?”
“Because…”
“Because it’s not worth waiting…”
“No… because I can’t have another day that you’re with me but you’re not mine… and I don’t want to wake up one day that you’re already with Shane… I know he’s my brother, but I don’t really care…”
“You’re mean to him…”
“Yah… I know… but I was first…”
“You’re childish… and it’s not about who came first or who came last, it’s about on who came and never left…”
“Are you saying that you’re going to pick him over me?”
“Hey, I didn’t say that… but I can still change my mind…”
“C’mon…”
“You’re really annoying…”
“Just a simple yes would zip my mouth…”
“It’s not that easy jumping to a relationship again you know…”
“Then we'll take it slow…”
“You’re really annoying…”
“Like I said, I won’t stop until you say yes…”
“Can’t you just wait?”

“Why not?”
“When I got injured, I saw everything that I lost and regret… our life is short… you won’t know… maybe tomorrow I’ll die…”
“You’re really a drama king…”
“Dramatic but true…”
“Shut up for a minute…”
“Just a simple yes would zip my mouth…”
I took a deep breath. “Sure…”
“That’s a yes, right?”
“What do you think?”
“Great!”
“You said that will shut your mouth…”
“Okay…”
“Oh yah, the doctor said you can come out tomorrow…”
“Sure…”
“Well, I guess I’ll go home now… but I’ll be back later…”
“Fine…”
“Oh yah, do I have to explain to my boss why I’m absent today?”
“Of course… he will need a brief explanation…”
“Okay…” I stood up and kissed him on the forehead. “Bye…”
“Bye…”
I turn around and I saw Shane looking from the door. When he noticed me, he quickly ran. And of course, I followed him. “Shane, wait!”
“What?” he muttered.
“I can explain…”
“You never gave me a chance… but to Adam, just one accident and you suddenly love him again… why?”
“Shane… I never said I stopped loving him…”
“Don’t tell me that line because you told me before that you’re not in love with him…”

“What?”
“Remember, the graduation party? You said you don’t love him anymore and you promised me that you won’t love him again… and that’s why you said I’ll be your boyfriend, though you didn't really gave me that chance…”
“I already told you before that I really can’t love you on the way you want me to… I only treat you as my best friend… my brother…”
“Stop repeating that because I’m sick and tired of that line…”
“Sorry… goodbye…” I hugged him tightly then went straight ahead.
I took the bus and went straight home. I quickly took a bath and have some breakfast. Mom nor dad didn’t ask any question on what happened and why I’m leaving again, I guess Shane told them about it when he drove my car back home.
I took the cab and went back to the hospital and went to Adam’s room. I can see that Nate and Shane are talking to him.
“Hey, I’m back…” I said.
“Oh, I need to go now…” Shane suddenly stood up.
“Shane…” I held his arm but he shook it off quickly. I followed him out. “What? You’re angry at me on what I said just this morning?”
“No, I just need to go…”
“Why do you need to go?”
“I have some things left at home that I haven’t finish yet…”
“I know you better than that… please Shane, I don’t want to lose a friend now… especially a best friend…”
“Don’t worry… you won’t lose me…” he turned his back on me again.
“C’mon… why are you avoiding me?”
“I’m not avoiding you… I just need to go now… you and Adam want to be alone, right?”

“I didn’t say that…”
“I just can’t be in the same room with you two around…”
“Why?”
“I really need to go… I’ll be back later…” he turned around again, now fast walking.
I ran until I blocked his way. “Stop…”
“What else do you want?”
“Okay, just tell me that you’re still my best friend Shane… and I’ll finally let you go…”
“Sure… I’m still your stupid best friend who is stupidly waiting for�"”
I slapped him. “That’s not what I want to hear…”
“That hurts…” he touched his cheeks.
“That’s just appropriate so you can open your eyes and see what your value is to me…”
“Wow, today is the only day that I knew that I have a value to you…”
“C’mon Shane, you know that what’s between Adam and me and what’s between you and me are different…”
“Yah sure…”
“You’re special to me…”
“Yah right…”
“Just tell me what I need to hear…”
“Fine… I’m still your dumb best friend�"”
“C’mon! You’re a total genius!”
“Sure… I’m still your imperfect best�"”
“Still not even close…”
“Okay… I’m still your best friend who’s always here for you whenever you’re down…”
“And whenever I’m happy…” I hugged him tightly.
“Sure…” he hugged me back. “Can I go now? My bladder is going to explode you know…”
“Really…” I raised one eyebrow. I know that’s not really what he means by he needs to go, well; at least he changed his mind.

“Yah… and you’re stopping me for your drama queen award?”
“Yah… so, did I have it?”
“Yes… and the dram queen award go to Ms. Mary Alyson Smith… happy?”
“Sure… I got what I want… you can go now…”
“Sure…” he walked straight ahead.
I know he knows I’m not really in for my drama queen award, and at least I’m sure he’s sincere on what he said about on his still my best friend. I went back to Adam’s room. “Hey, I’m back… again…”
“So, how’s it going?” Nate asked.
“What?” I walk toward them and went beside Adam.
“You, Shane…”
“I’m a drama queen… like you can’t read my mind…”
“Congrats…” it’s easier for me to talk to Nate now, it’s like we’re communicating in our minds. I know he already knows what I mean by what I said on I’m a drama queen.
“Okay, so if you two understand each other, could you explain that to me? I’m a slow-learner…” Adam muttered.
“Oh, sorry… we’re from another planet, so you can’t really understand us…” I brushed my hand through his hair.
“I can see that…”
“Good…” Nate said.
“Okay… so, can’t I really go out later? I feel perfectly fine now…”
“Wait for tomorrow… you’re lucky you can go out tomorrow, other people who have the same cases like yours stay on the hospital for a week or so…” I muttered.
“Oh alright… so are you staying here until I get out?”
“Um no…”
“Why not?”

“My boss will be really mad at me if I do that… I can’t have too many absents…” I smiled playfully.
“Don’t worry… your boss will understand you…”
“How can you be sure?”
“I know the guy…”
“Can I talk to my boss first? To be sure…”
“Sure…” he turned his face to more serious. “What do you want?”
“Um sir, can I have a live?”
“Why?”
“I need to take care of a friend…”
“Just a friend?”
“Yes…”
“Then no…”
“I need to take care of my boyfriend…”
“You’re already taken?”
“I guess I have no choice anyway…”
“Sure…” he put his normal look again. “So what did he say?”
“He said okay…”
“Great…”
“Hey, want some lunch?” Nate asked.
“Sure…”
“How about you Alyson?”
“Sure…” I said.
“What do you want?”
“Cheeseburger and fries and soda…”
“Me too…” Adam said.
“Okay… good thing there’s a McDonald’s near from here…” he said then went out.
I decided to sit where Nate is sitting before.
“Hey, I’m back… good thing I saw Nate, or I don’t have any lunch…” Shane said.
“Good for you…” Adam said.
“Thanks for�"” I said but he cut me off.

“That’s okay…”
After we eat lunch, I decided to go straight home. I forgot that I still left my Ford at home so I just took the bus again.
“Hey, how’s Adam?” my mom asked.
“Um, his fine now…” I said.
“Oh, great…”
“Yah…” I went to my room. I look at the drawer, and it’s still there. The doll Adam gave me three years ago. I put it on my bag, so I can bring it tomorrow. After I checked my emails, I decided to go to the spices�"where I reached the restaurant at exactly twelve pm. I guess Ashley is managing.
“Hey, sorry I’m late…” I said.
“Hey, Mr. Cyrus said you’ll be having a live…” Martin said.
“Yah… well, I guess I’ll start that live tomorrow…”
“Okay…”
Today was really hectic. There are a lot of customers and a lot of hard recipes. By the time we close the restaurant, we were really exhausted. We even need to do overtime just to finish. I didn’t know that a lot of people missed the restaurant. I just went straight home, to my bed. I didn’t bother visiting Adam again, since I’ll be with him for one whole week anyway.
I woke up a little late than I expected. Well, it’s not my fault I got home by twelve am. I guess the people just love the restaurant so much that they can’t have four days without it. Good thing I decided to help or I can’t imagine how William and the rest can be more exhausted�"more than we felt now�" Ashley even helped us in the kitchen.
After I took a bath and eat breakfast, I went straight to the hospital. I can see that Adam really wants to go out now.
“Hey…” I said.
“Oh hey… so, can I go home now?” Adam asked.

“Sure…”
The doctor went inside and told Adam something I didn’t bother to listen to. I can see that they’re doing the same�"especially Adam. He became his same playful, childish self. The doctor had to give him two sermons first, before he can go out.
“Good thing you don’t need to use a wheelchair…” I said.
“Of course…” he muttered.
I assisted him to get into Shane’s Ferrari, though he doesn’t look like he needs it.
“Thanks for the help…”
“What help? You can walk by yourself…”
“For your blood…”
“That’s nothing…”
“That’s a big deal you know…”
“You saved my life too…”
“Sure…”
