Have you ever?

Have you ever been fooled?  

I mean really fooled beyond belief and then more. Feeling like you've been turned inside out, gasping for air, face to the wall.

Mortified.

Mostly by what you thought was reality, only to find out it was a delusion at best.  At best.  Best of what, actually? How can anything about a delusion be best, you may ask.

Truth be told, many live in such a delusion for years without ever realizing it. Crossing over to eternity, wrapped in that delusion without even a second thought, never questioning...

What causes that, I wonder?

Have we lost the ability to discern in this day and age? Have we forgotten to listen and pay attention to that inner voice, that inner feeling, that voice of reason we all have, somewhere. 

Do we find ourselves drowing it out by picking up a cigarette, glass of wine, shot of something stronger, bottle of beer, etc. etc. Anything to stop that nagging sense that something's amiss.

Or have we simply stopped trying...

Many things cause this including at least initially a search for love and peace. The problem is when love and peace are not comfortable and immediate which can certainly happen. Many destructive behaviors have a way of providing a certain comfort, security, and even an amount of faith; sometimes from little more than being habitual. All of these things people inherently seek and do at times accept cardboard copies. There is those who just hate themselves too and feel deserving and many in between.

.. and then, their self destructive behaviors only compound that sad belief.

Agreed. I usually try to critique the piece more than offer an expansion or my personal opinion of the matter, or at least do both. It happens here and there though where I will express something outside of a basic critique.

Oh yes...I have been there and then beaten myself to a pulp for being so gullible. ...for not listening to my inner voice which was screaming through my poetry. So interesting how strong denial can be...how effective those blinders are. This touched a nerve.

It makes you wonder sometimes, though, doesn't it? Is it that we're so gullible or simply giving people the benefit of the doubt? or is it that we project our expectations and outcomes onto others who might not be so reciprocal
