My Gift

it’s been a long time

since i allowed the term girlfriend

to be part of my identity.

i was busy

building my own  life

and protecting my heart.

it’s been a long time

since i entertained the idea of a boyfriend

as a part of my life.

i was busy

convincing myself

that i could figure it out on my own.

it’s been a long time

since i’ve given this gift

to another.

i was consumed by

thinking that surely i had

more to give.

the truth is,

all that i have to give is

myself.

it’s been a long time

since i’ve given this gift

to another,

and i trust that

 you will treasure it.
