Beyond the Water's Edge

Beyond the Water's Edge

A Poem by Alis Quinn

There stands at the shore,
one who stares,
out over the water's
that lure
into their icy depths,
he who dares.
Gazing in awe,
with naive admiration
the water
licks enticingly at his heels,
without intimidation.
And yet,
that peaceful silence
is but a battle cry,
As the strong currents
rush swiftly by
taking any in its way
to their fate.
While,
just below the surface
danger waits,
As the invisible winds
come rushing in
creating innocent ripples
which dangerously churn
as they too begin
to work their course
of destruction.
The fool,
now wise to the plot,
tries hopelessly
to disentangle himself
from the seaweed
in which he is caught.
And, as they drag
his lifeless form
to the shore,
his silent soul
makes a pledge:
  "Never again,
to venture "
  Beyond the Water's Edge!"

I say, 'Welcome to the Writer's Cafe"! You enter with an adventure poem. Tell me, at what point does our victim actually set foot in the water? I see him staring over the water's edge and I see a dare by the passing water. Then I see the water licking enticingly at his heels.
Alis, I am not being picky. I am following the pace of your story and the key points. Because at the end, he has become a lifeless form.
I like the poem, I would have just liked to have seen less left to the reader's imagination because in the end result; it is yours, the author's poem. Let's not give it to each individual reader.
