Sometimes instincts endure the fire of evolution, even when they shouldn't.

"

She couldn't help it. It was a simple knee-jerk reaction, like the way you shiver when it's cold.

Being with him conjured up old reactions; reaching out for his hand, smiling up at him, listening intently to every word he said. Even though they weren't together anymore, she couldn't keep herself from these almost instinctual motions towards him. He'd become her world in those short months, and then was gone as soon as he had come, leaving her a backstage of scaffolding and plaster, not nearly enough to hold a person together.

Friends. We can be friends.


She couldn't help it. It was a knee-jerk reaction.

She reached up to kiss him, and he pulled away.

Instinctually.
