Living Well

Living Well

A Poem by Kate Johnson

I have lived for fifteen years.

I remember crying, frowning, watching,

Looking away, being successful

And bearing disappointment.

I have lived for fifteen years,

And I think I have lived well.

My brother has lived for twelve years.

He remembers smiling, crying, laughing,

Staring, being adventurous

And being afraid of the dark.

He has lived for twelve years,

And I think he has lived well.

My parents have lived for forty five years.

They remember working, resting, loving,

Arguing, being tired, feeling old,

And dancing in the rain.

They have lived for forty five years,

And I think they have lived well.

My sister lived for four years.

She remembered laughing, talking, smiling,

Learning, growing, playing,

And being in a world of gold.

My sister lived for four years,

And I think she lived the best of us all.
