Awakening IIA Chapter by Alex J. Griffinchapter 2
II Slick with slime, something from ages far gone moved in the cavern. Deep underground it lay, waiting for the day it would recover from the great mage’s final stroke. A stroke that with the last beat of his heart, he delivered, incinerating most of the beast’s body and sealing him within a cavern-like barrier. Slowly, ever so slowly, it squeezed, pushed, and pulled at the barrier. and over the ages it was able to get its body through the barrier. For a time it didn’t believe it would make it. Its body was being held tight by the barrier, squeezed between opposign sides, but it managed to release the air in its lungs and squirm through. Exhausted, it crawled on, each foot a foot towards freedom. Taking another step it felt a twinge and then pain! The barrier no longer held the shape of a sphere, but a pincer; like two walls, one on top of the other, pushing down on the demon's tail, holding it in place. Thrashing in pain. Acid spittle and blood was flung from its open mouth, freckleing the surrounding rock face. As it reared its head it hit a hanging stalactite and a tooth shot out of its mouth at an incredible speed, ricocheting like a bullet off the walls until it finally wedged itself into a crack in the wall. There it stayed, protruding from the stone wall. The beast fell to the ground, too exhausted to continue or care. It had waited ages to get out of the sphere, what was a little longer? The barrier will only weaken further. © 2008 Alex J. Griffin
