Fireflies

Fireflies

A Poem by Alexis Caitlin King

nothing’s important nowadays

the young girl said to me

just purposeless sacks

it’s what we’re meant to be

i’m important

cried the fireflies

resenting the girl’s naivety

nothing but wise

the girl was stubborn

denying the importance

‘just bugs’claimed she

a deplorable stance

the fireflies reeled back

in shock, horror and fright

surely she didn’t mean it

on this magical night

the night passed by

long awaited by time

the little girl got older

reached the peak of the climb

then she looked to the trees

and saw only one

where was the wilderness--

where was the fun?

it took many years

to shape and to grow

to see the real beauty

so few people know
