Perseus' Victory

Perseus' Victory

A Story by Alexis Caitlin King

The snakes here are far from tame. Their sharp, poisonous teeth clench
closer to your face. Just close your eyes and shut your mouth; kiss me
like you mean it. Don’t open those shutters; you might be blinded by
this light. You’ll freeze, hard and rigid. Our eyes will lock, set heavy
in stone. Look at me through that mirror, the sleek obsidian of the
earth. See my hollow eyes glowing; take your aim and strike. Remove me
from this filthy horror. A gorgon’s price to pay.  On the back of a
feathered beast, fly swiftly away with my soul. I know this creature you
carry me on is birthed from my own blood and bone. Just take me far
away from this state of anguish; let me feel the wind yet again. Life
inside an endless cavern becomes bleak and inert in time.  I know now
the happiness I could have followed, had I only changed your mind.
