Pieces

Pieces

A Poem by Alene Parr

Unpleasant whisper,

I feel you

Wafting against my cheek,

Uncomfortably flowing

Into my open mouth,

Slightly unhinged,

Sour and stagnant.

Bitterest memory,

You’ve clouded

My perception,

So I placed you

On a shelf

That’s almost a little

Too low to reach,

In a box

That’s almost a little

Too hard to open.

But I’m still trying to

Hide the key.

Dwindling sunshine,

You have warmed

While the wind as blown,

You have lit

What the dark has

Extinguished

As long as you could,

As long as you

Were able.

Familiar void,

I have filled you

Or I have tried to.

Your edges rise

Ever higher

Always taller,

You are deeper,

I am filling.

Teasing laughter,

You remind me

Of once upon a time,

Of a film I once saw,

Of a story I once wrote,

Of the smile

I had hoped

To put on

A face.

Gracious stranger,

You are darling.

You are unexpected

I did not anticipate

To find you today.

I did not intend

To look into your eyes,

To catch them

Or maybe you caught mine.

I did not mean

To wonder

What it would be like

To feel your breath on my cheek

For a change,

To remember you

On my darkest days,

To feel warmth

On the inside,

To fill my chest

With you

Instead,

To listen to your

Chuckle,

To your laugh,

To see the wrinkles form around your eyes,

And the light glint from off your teeth.

Sweetest love,

I see you

Crumpling everything

That I know,

Tossing it

Into the corner.

Telling me to forget it.

I do not need it anymore.

Mysterious forever,

I am wondering.

I am curious.

I am peeking at you

From across the room,

Never sure

If it is safe to say hello,

To introduce myself,

To welcome you into

My mind and body

And invite you to stay.

Shouting uncertainty,

You are loud.

Your dark noise

Is overwhelming.

It is blacking out

My reveries.

Shattered dream,

You are

Walking out

The door.

Walking from

My life.

Exiting

My future.

Crumbling through

My fingers.

I don’t even try

To catch

Your pieces.
