Moon ShineA Poem by Alene ParrAnd as the moon Sheds its identity And hides amidst the clouds And waits for the sun To bring about the light That the lovers lying below On the ground Anticipate. And they wait. They wait for the moonlight to bounce
off each others eyes To hide the emptiness that was there
before. And sometimes they use drinks and
sometimes they take drugs But tonight they just want moonlight. But the
moon is shy and lonely. The
moon doesn’t want to shine. Waiting
for the sun to reflect upon its surface, Waiting
for the sun to remind it why It is
beautiful When it
is glowing in the sky. When it
is casting its light Onto
the fairies and the trees. And the
sleeping creatures scattered through the forests. And the
ugly homeless beatniks Lying
in the alleyways, Red
wine spilling on the concrete floor. The
blinking traffic light takes the place of the moon. It
glows red And it
blinks And it
doesn’t hide the ugliness And it
doesn’t highlight beauty. And
with each blink the lovers cast their eyes upon each other And
think What am
I doing? Where
is the moon? And a
dog barks in the background As his
family sleeps indoors And
they are warm And
they don’t see the red light Or the
absence of the moon And
they carry on, sleeping soundly in the night. But the
parents once were lovers, Staring
at the sky Longing
for the moonlight To hide
what’s in their eyes. And the
smoke rose up about their faces And
there was buzzing in their ears And it
seemed to them the moon was hiding It’s been hiding there for years. © 2014 Alene ParrReviews
