Moon Shine

Moon Shine

A Poem by Alene Parr

And as the moon

Sheds its identity

And hides amidst the clouds

And waits for the sun

To bring about the light

That the lovers lying below

On the ground

Anticipate.

And they wait.

They wait for the moonlight to bounce off each others eyes

To hide the emptiness that was there before.

And sometimes they use drinks and sometimes they take drugs

But tonight they just want moonlight.

But the moon is shy and lonely.

The moon doesn’t want to shine.

Waiting for the sun to reflect upon its surface,

Waiting for the sun to remind it why

It is beautiful

When it is glowing in the sky.

When it is casting its light

Onto the fairies and the trees.

And the sleeping creatures scattered through the forests.

And the ugly homeless beatniks

Lying in the alleyways,

Red wine spilling on the concrete floor.

The blinking traffic light takes the place of the moon.

It glows red

And it blinks

And it doesn’t hide the ugliness

And it doesn’t highlight beauty.

And with each blink the lovers cast their eyes upon each other

And think

What am I doing?

Where is the moon?

And a dog barks in the background

As his family sleeps indoors
And their furnace comes on

And they are warm

And they don’t see the red light

Or the absence of the moon

And they carry on, sleeping soundly in the night.

But the parents once were lovers,

Staring at the sky

Longing for the moonlight

To hide what’s in their eyes.

And the smoke rose up about their faces

And there was buzzing in their ears

And it seemed to them the moon was hiding

It’s been hiding there for years.

Unless you've been spending way too much time with Doris Day on vinyl, there is a sonog from the 40's called "No Moon At All", which I can't imagine you're familiar with, that this shares some very odd parallels with. This is a lovely narrative, well-built and easily flowing, and it positively overflows with winsomeness (and I mean that as a compliment.) There are those who would take offense at having their work referred to as "charming", thinking it damning with faint praise--but charming in a work can be a very good thing, and it certainly is so here.

"But the moon is shy and lonely./The moon doesn’t want to shine./Waiting for the sun to reflect upon its surface,/Waiting for the sun to remind it why/It is beautiful"

These lines really stand out for their simple, yet compelling depth. You have a strong command of subtle language full of nuances that layer your poetry well. The flow and ebb of this poem reflects well its thought provoking message. Excellent.
