Cobalt SkyA Poem by Annette LemmaNear the Anniversary of September 11Late summer tomatoes still on the window sill Not mine, mind you, not that I mind. Growing them in a pot does not compare To the Earth Where crickets dwell and Chirp all night and day and night And cicadas hang on for dear life With one leg or Whatever makes them sing Staccato cicada static. Late summer tennis and baseball And Fútbol and Football And students studying And parents parenting And driving all over God’s Creation. The Pope is asking us to Fast on Saturday for Peace While birds feast on Sunflowers and lanky ornamental grasses Preparing for their Journey. Cool morning breezes whisper Over dewy damp lawns Below a sky as blue as cobalt. Exactly the same sky that covered My son’s 4th Birthday on September 11 in the year of our Lord 2001 © 2013 Annette Lemma |
