A Life Unlived

A Life Unlived

A Poem by Nankya Yudaya
"

Moving through life wishing you'd catch a breathe and enjoy a moment, quite an unrealistic dream but you keep wishing ....

"
Just a girl with a life she can't live because she had to grow up way too fast to take care of her family
Parents divorced when she was just four
both remarried, everything changed
Father staying as loving and accommodating, step mother was a witch
With only two sons, second marriage collapsed after five years, father lost everything during the settlement, she stayed with relatives
They mistreated her, she filed for emancipation
At last! father's situation was stressful though
Her first job, she bought him a house, it was a start!
Saw her two brothers through school
Mother had disappeared only to return with five more kids under her belt

Sins of the parents, loads on her shoulders
Relationships failed, family baggage
Forced to celibacy, boyfriends can be too much work!
Some privileges she can't afford, it hurts sometimes
seeing people in love, she breaks down. It's depressing but can't afford to have a moment of vulnerability
Decides on better distraction to avoid sulking
It's movies, all gory movies there is, binge watching. No love stories, or she lapses
and buries herself in work, no leave days not because she doesn't need a break but can't afford the privilege, family might starve . she needs all the money she can get.
Tries empowering family to share responsibility, they flunk
Disappointed, she lashes!
But it's family, family forever
Against all odds
Resorts to hustling by her lonesome to provide for them all
Phone rings off day after day
Father is sick
Mother is sick
Sister needs some money
Brother needs school materials
Cries herself to sleep sometime
No break!

She needs her time, she can't get it
When she does, it's shot-lived
She's lonely yet she can't say it
A bank
A charity organization
A pillar, is what she is
She's too burdened but can't complain
Her youth is sacrificed but nobody seems to care
She didn't ask for any of it yet took responsibility
Feels like screaming yet not sure anybody would care to listen
Her needs are not as important, so they believe
She's just a girl missing some pampering
She's just a girl wishing somebody would ask how she's doing and genuinely be interested in the reply everybody else just wouldn't care to hear

What an empty life!
Social misfit, nobody understands
She tries so hard and wishes so much but happiness eludes her
Solitude by default
She's just a girl with a life unlived!

Wow - what a story. Can all this really happen to one person. A live unlived really describes it well. You havent said if this is true or fiction. If it's fiction you wouldn't expect anyone to believe it but anyone who could survive all these events must be very strong.
Well done for sharing.
All the best.

This is so well penned. Sadly it's a story that most can relate to. Sometimes it might feel as though our lives were over even before they began. Like we were delt with a s****y hand on a game we didn't even know how to play, much less wanted to. Thanks for sharing.
