'Manicarus'
alangraham,
This is a fast paced word picture. Being a raised energy state the form of this poem is perfect. I like the way your lines balance and sway into the emotional reality of this subject. It is super interesting to actually feel how it would feel to someone else in reading a poem. Great work!

It came from a few weeks when I was high and I couldn't stop writing. Most of it was unprintable but a few have made it onto the menu in Wc. For me this creativity has been a very positive of bipolar but the downside is horrible. Last year I spent a few weeks as an involuntary patient in south Africa. You really appreciate that you loved one's who care!
Hope you are well.

This might seem a bit weird to many but this is exactly how I feel when I'm manic. Luckily it is not too often and normally moderated by my Lithium. Many people have said 'I get high sometimes' but i have to explain that its a different way of feeling altogether. Thanks, Annette, for your understanding words. The hard thing is explaining how feeling fantastic means that I'm ill!
All the best,
Alan
Like Alice down the rabbit hole and Mad Hatter's tea-party! Poetic roller-coaster ride to the sun and through it to the dark side of mania- or is it genius? Is it both? Wild spiralling lines, flow, rhyme pattern. Honest and insightful account. As a nurse, I've witnessed the cycles and recognize the truth of this poem. Madly brilliant. Thank you for sharing this!
My first reaction: Crazy as a shithouse rat. Upon further contemplation, same reaction with a codicil - yeah but that's what he wanted, you ninny. Thus, it was brilliant, still crazy, but crazy brilliant.

The frantic pace and random connections very telling and well done! And the reference to Icarus and the sun of the few appropriate ones I have ever seen! Nice.
Most people I know do not describe a soft landing or safety chute, but more of a crash. It is important to hear a diverse experiences!

However I know lots of people with bipolar don't like to acknowledge that, so the poem made sense to me. That was part of my thing about soft landing! Once again, thank you for sharing this!
The whole poem is definitely an intense walk thru the journey of mania, but stanza 9 is the best collection of rushing sensations, stated in words. This is definitely your best poem that I've read so far. Thanks for directing me here to enjoy it.

A manic high is better than any drug-induced high.
Married with three kids, I retired early from teaching physics but have always enjoyed mountains. In my forties I experienced a manic episode which kick-started a creative urge. I've written a novel .. more..
