Manicarus

Manicarus

A Poem by alanwgraham
"

a description of how it feels to be manic

"

Man-ic-arus!

synapses well salted

Lithium carbonated

A magic potion

tae quell my emotion

I’m one of the few

nae downs tae depress

some highs I confess

that are bliss!

when slumber’s a stranger

A foretaste of danger

A high will creep

up on me real sloooooooow

but I start to KNOW

when I say ‘fantastic’

A LOT!

fantastic fantastic  fantastic fantastic

adbloodynauseam

because everything IS!

Fantastic!

Nae inhib’s now

tae tether me down

flying sky high

I’m kidding you not!

talk tae anyone

that I meet

like a long lost mate

conversations get deep!

Just one thing more

There’s no need to bore

start to rhyme

all the time

wake up at three

and not for a pee!

MUST write down some verse

no need to rehearse

words just gush

have to rush

out my words!

a veritable Niagara

 and …

Ah yes, there’s Viagra

it comes free with the high

libido through the roof

but I won’t give you proof

just ask the wife

confessions

indiscretions

galore - I wish!

With Senses blazing

All is amazing

Music mesmerizes

Each taste sent from heaven

Sweet and sour savour

Exquisite flavour

Aromas tantalise

dull scales of normality

seared from my eyes

I SEE ALL ANEW!

Watching a film, wow!

meaning and insight

in gesture and word

Art stuns, and amazing

colours dazzling

significance found

for eye and for mind

I use the word ‘like’

A LOT!

links and connections

ideas and constructions

spring out of nowhere

inventions and theory

leaving me bleary eyed

at long last it’s done

been brainboggling fun

but now time for stock taking

synapses start braking

my safety chute opens

and I float back to earth

Man-Icarus has soft landed

But I have gazed into the sun!

'Manicarus'
alangraham,
This is a fast paced word picture. Being a raised energy state the form of this poem is perfect. I like the way your lines balance and sway into the emotional reality of this subject. It is super interesting to actually feel how it would feel to someone else in reading a poem. Great work!

This might seem a bit weird to many but this is exactly how I feel when I'm manic. Luckily it is not too often and normally moderated by my Lithium. Many people have said 'I get high sometimes' but i have to explain that its a different way of feeling altogether. Thanks, Annette, for your understanding words. The hard thing is explaining how feeling fantastic means that I'm ill!
All the best,
Alan

Like Alice down the rabbit hole and Mad Hatter's tea-party! Poetic roller-coaster ride to the sun and through it to the dark side of mania- or is it genius? Is it both? Wild spiralling lines, flow, rhyme pattern. Honest and insightful account. As a nurse, I've witnessed the cycles and recognize the truth of this poem. Madly brilliant. Thank you for sharing this!

My first reaction: Crazy as a shithouse rat. Upon further contemplation, same reaction with a codicil - yeah but that's what he wanted, you ninny. Thus, it was brilliant, still crazy, but crazy brilliant.

Wow. So intense! A powerful description of what it must be like in the highs. Enjoyed reading it very much.

The frantic pace and random connections very telling and well done! And the reference to Icarus and the sun of the few appropriate ones I have ever seen! Nice.
Most people I know do not describe a soft landing or safety chute, but more of a crash. It is important to hear a diverse experiences!

The whole poem is definitely an intense walk thru the journey of mania, but stanza 9 is the best collection of rushing sensations, stated in words. This is definitely your best poem that I've read so far. Thanks for directing me here to enjoy it.

I don't condone drug usage, I've seen too many highs that ended six foot under. Nonetheless this was a well written tale in poetic form.
