First Sunset

First Sunset

A Story by A.B
"

it is just amazing when you are in love with someone..and you feel that anything you do together as if it's done for the first time...even if it was the last!

"

She was suffocating. She left the black crowd and went to her bedroom. She closed the door, sat on her bed and breathed deeply, looking at the closed door - waiting for him to enter right after her. She waited for a few seconds then walked to the window and opened it slowly. It was nearly sunset, she leaned on the cold window bar watching the sun. The orange light reflecting on her skin made her remember, she looked at the sun and said: "It was the first time you held my hand…we were watching the sunset"

"Yes I remember" he replied,
Shocked and surprised she turned and said "Gosh you scared me, when did you come in?"
He remained silent.
"Won't you come and watch the sunset with me".
"Oh Izzy, don't you ever get bored of watching sunsets?" He said smiling, walking towards her.
She smiled back "You know I never do". She went back to watching the sun, him beside her, she had always loved the times they would meditate and be silent together. She sighed deeply and closed her eyes.

He watched the wind playing with her hair and thought how she is much more beautiful than the sun, she was more beautiful than music and more beautiful than children's laughter. He touched her warm cheeks.

"Your hands are so cold" she said

"Ahh…are they?!"

He left the window and sat on the bed reaching to hold her hands and said with a shaking voice, "You know I will never leave you right?"
"You just did"
"I didn't"

She looked back to the sky and the sun, she could feel his fingers between her fingers. She tried to runaway from the thought but she couldn't. The thought of loneliness and the painful love she was trapped inside. She said to herself "The sky, the sun and the sunset are my only friends now, they will listen to my pain and read my thoughts". That was the first time she cried. She had promised not to cry but she felt her heart was about to burst if she didn’t. Something in her head was banging, banging like a hammer. It was so noisy in her head, uncomfortably noisy, she could hardly hear her own voice sobbing.

“Izzy, please stop crying”. His mellow voice calmed her down. She wiped away her tears on her sleeves, put her cold hands on her face to feel some freshness and forced herself to stop crying.
They remained silent for a minute then she said “Adam, do you remember the first song we heard together?”

He suddenly started singing dramatically,“Ever and ever, forever and ever you'll be the one, that shines in me like the morning sun.”

She was laughing hysterically watching him as if it was the first time to see him singing. She felt like they were meeting each other for the first time and that she was knowing him all over again. She admired him silently and watched his dramatic funny acting expressions as he continued singing, “Ever and ever, forever and ever you'll be my spring, my rainbow's end and the song I sing.”

He stopped singing, and she stopped laughing, but the echo of her heartfelt laugh in his ears didn’t stop and neither did his tender deep gaze towards her did stop. She felt this firm certainty inside her, she knew his love would never stop, his passion would never stop, even if life stops.

“Even if life stops” he says.

She looked at him smiling and saw the most beautiful world she could ever live within. Her childhood and innocence, her crazy adolescence, her passionate youth, she saw flowers, seas, kites and sailing boats, butterflies, sunsets and fields of golden maze. She saw her freedom, her salvation and her pride. She saw the love - the love of her life.

“As if I see you for the first time.”

“Every time is the first time” he said.

Someone knocked at the door. A little boy entered. “Mama, what are you doing near the window, it’s freezing.”

She smiled at him.

“Who were you talking to Mama?”

Her smile faded “I was talking to the sun” she said.

“Grandma says we should be moving now for the funeral”

She took in the corners of the room, the bed, the ceiling, the walls and the side table. She looked at the glass of water from which he had taken his last sip.

She looked back at the sun and felt a shiver at the back of her neck, she felt a hand holding hers tightly, so she held herself together and nodded silently ..then quietly said "Am coming".

Your first story? I'm impressed. There were a few awkwardly-worded sentences and other small things, but overall, I found this warm, engaging tale to be very well written. The heart-wrenching ending shed a different light on all that had gone before, and was a real surprise.
