Which is WhichA Story by AKMy first time at the controls.
My good friend Bruce shares the same passion I have for flying.
One beautiful summer day he called to tell me to meet him at his plane. Of course I did and soon we were airborne in the vast expanse of Alaska’s glorious skies. He trimmed out our sturdy Piper Super Cub and called out over the head set, “You’ve got the plane”. It was the first time I had ever flown a plane and it was all that I had dreamed.
My life changed that day as we soared over Tustumena Lake and I felt the aircraft become an extension of me. What a joy as that machine nimbly responded to every command.
Too soon Bruce barked “I’ve got it!” He throttled up and we headed out over the massive Harding Ice Field. As we climbed ever higher I saw some of the most beautiful country on Earth fall away beneath us. In time, we exited the rugged mountains and turned west over Resurrection Bay. Passing over Seward, we followed the Seward Highway, slipping between the splendid mountaintops to our left and right. Oh, we were free indeed!
Soon we came to the Cooper Landing area where two beautiful turquoise green lakes sparkled in the sunbathed mountain valley below, one up-slope from the other. Bruce called out, “Upper and Lower Russian Lakes” while motioning ahead and to the left of our craft.
With the humor that only old friends can share I pushed my microphone button and innocently asked, “which is which?”
Just as I had anticipated his shoulders rose and fell with laughter and he snorted back “don’t know”.
