Appeal to Poetry

A Poem by Andrew John

We enjoy reading poems from the past.

They describe those ages, their horrors.

Should we regret delectation as we suck in,

and smile at, repugnance, misery, sadness?

Should we repel such poems of sorrow

choose only humour, gladness, joy?

So easily can we turn our backs on

misery that tortures so many.

So quickly may we lie on the ground,

punch it with clenched hands,

roar with our cries; or may we smile,

get up, forget what is so far behind us?

Gee
Am not nor have I ever been a great reader of anything let alone poetry. Have been steered, by my peers in the cafe, towards Emily D and Frost, both of them enjoyed.
I find grief, misery a much better partner when it comes to my writing(most times)
Again enjoyed your words

I like to read all types of poetry which cover all subjects and all emotions. The war poets remind us of the futility of war. That needs to be firmly embedded in the brain of each one of us on this planet. Nicely penned, thoughtful poetry Andrew.
