Chapter Seven-New BeginningsA Chapter by matpatChapter 7 I found Don sitting atop a trash can holding a crumpled note in his hand. He sat staring at the ground in front of him with a dazed look in his eye. “Hey squirt, what’s up?” “He’s coming for me.” Don said. “Who?” “My brother.” I honestly didn’t know how to respond to this, I could either not care and say shrug it off or, I could help him out. “Call the cops.” I told him. “It ain’t that easy.” “Why? Afraid he’d get’cha easier?” “He already has me.” Don said angrily as he crumpled the paper in his hand and threw it to the floor. I picked it up and read it, ‘Don, I know where you are, and I’m coming to get you, you little trouble maker.’ “So? Just get the cops.” “Don’t you see? He is the cops, he ain’t ever gonna let me go till the day I die and git outta his life.” “Oh.” I looked at him, he looked scared for his life, like I did when…when everything had been so wrong, “Common he ain’t gonna hurt you, I gotta buddy on the inside, he gets rid of my speedin’ tickets and lets the hoods get away with drag racing and stuff, I think he can help ya.” “No, nothing can help me.” “Fine, if you don’t want the cops get back to my house, wouldn’t want to make it easy for him, would you?” “Naw, guess not.” Don got up and we both walked together. From behind us a car sneaked across the asphalt almost silently, like a snake. I recognized it form earlier this morning. “You better learn to stay out of trouble.” “What?” I jerked my head back, Don looked over his shoulder and wiped it around fast, “Oh, sorry bout’ that.” “Yeah well.” The car sped up and stopped. Don and I stood there while one of them got out and stepped towards us. “What now?” I snarled. “That’s the kid that busted my car.” He said. “Yeah so?” “If he ain’t gonna pay for it, he’ll have to fight us.” “He already did, and lost. Why don’t you just get outta here?” “That’s not what I meant, a rumble.” “Rumble huh?” “Yup.” “You’re being pretty ridiculous about a car.” “Nup.” He said, “Unless you greases don’t want to fight.” “Where?” “That lot over on your territory.” “We’ll be there.” I said, the soc smiled and went back to his car and drove off, “Look at the trouble they’s goin’ through, all over a busted tail light.”
