Beyond A Shadow Of A Doubt..by Michael

A Story by Michael Reisman

Braces adorned her crooked teeth. Eyeglasses sat a little low on the bridge of her nose. Frumpy clothes decorated her body as outdated hair styles highlighted her head. This is the picture of a girl named Beverly. A smart and intelligent young lady however with always top grades from grammar school right through college. Not much of a social life, but she was happy anyway. We get used to a way of life and accept it the way it is. One true friend attended the same schools and some of the same classes all the way through those college years. His name was Benny and he was struggling with his grades in that senior year they attended together. She offered to tutor him as they exchanged visits to each others homes. His grades improved dramatically as the star quarterback of the football team made it to graduation. Other girl students were quite disappointed. They were never asked to the senior prom as he was the most handsome one there. Beverly and Benny showed up together that special evening. Nobody else could understand why he picked her as his date. The long lasting friendship became something more. Serious romance and dating followed after those college years. The same company was shared as they both worked together on their first job out of school. The young couple decided to get married two years later. Both sets of parents were extremely happy about this upcoming event. The cover of their wedding album wasn't a present photo, but one of an old picture taken at the senior prom. That's the way they wanted to be remembered. Maybe outward appearances didn't play a part in the way Benny felt in his heart. Love happens when the time is right no matter what. Case in point in a short love story about Beverly and Benny where the cover of a wedding album proves it beyond a shadow of a doubt...

I really like this. It's the high school sweetheart romance that so many people dream about; and so many novels are based on.
I find it particularly impressive that you could essentially wrap up a novel about these two in one paragraph! All the essential details are there but there's no fluff.
Awesome skills, keep it up!

I like this piece. It kept me wondering if irony was going to jump out and bite me. I also really like the description of Beverly. I was a little fuzzier on the description of Benny. Also, It left me with some questions. Why were these two friends when they were obviously miles apart in social status? While they were friends before the tutoring, how'd it progress to romance? Was the romance covering something else? Her private desperation? His homosexuality? Was the photo/photo album symbolic? I think this could make a nice study of cliques and those rare times people step out of them if developed further.
