SunnyA Poem by JinxMy senior year of high school, I volunteered with some friends at a school for kids with sever mental disabilities and handicaps. Sunny was the youngest kid in our group (she's the picture)I see you sitting trapped in the confines of your own mind, the prison of your body, cage of your chair searching wildly about the room with unconscious liveliness. We meet, and the day after we meet again, and again the next. You laugh, smile, you frown, cry all the while I wonder: Do you understand? What you are, what you’re doing, what you could have been-- A singer, sister, dancer, daughter. They call you the Duchess, but it doesn’t matter. You don’t know any better, and I fight tears as you sit there swatting at the shooting stars only you can see. © 2011 Jinx |
