The Note.

How Carter and I became friends. Read it and review it please :)

  Carter walks into French class two minutes late. Everyone looks at him as he walks into the room, head down, holding his binder and book.

  "Why are you late, Carter?" Madame Inch asks him as he takes his seat beside me.

  He sniffles, still looking at the ground and says, "Sorry. I had to talk to the teacher."

  She shoots him a look then turns back to the class and begins talking again about French verbs or whatever. I'm not paying attention.

  I hear Carter sniffle again, so I turn my head and look at him. He lifts his head and his eyes are blood-shot and his cheeks are all puffy.

  He has been crying.

  Carter looks at me, and wipes his eyes. Then looks back down at the desk.

 

  Carter is in grade eight, but takes grade seven French because he failed.

  I turn to Carter and whisper to him, "Are you okay?" He looks up at me.

  "Yeah", he says softly. "I'm fine."

  I turn back to Madame Inch as she starts writing down answers for a sheet, but then I turn back to Carter.

  "If you wanna talk, I'm here", I whisper again.

  "I'm fine, Alice", he snaps back. 

  I quickly turn back to Madame Inch, and I see an unfinished French assignment in front of me.

  I get an idea. 

  I grab my pencil and write in the left corner, "I'm sorry". Then I nudge the paper slowly on to his desk.

  He looks at it, then writes something down and then passes it back to me.

  4?

  I write, "I don't know. Sorry you are having a bad day". Then I show the paper back to him and he writes something else down. Then he shoves it back to me.

  Thanks.

  I write, "Any time. I will shut up now". Then I pass it back to him. He writes something and then shows it to me once again.

  I look at the note. I look at it again. Then I erase everything. 

  But I keep the word thanks. I don't know why.

This story brings me back to high school days of passing notes and whatnot. For a short story it shows the power of friendship and a simple note to tell them that you are there for them!
