"

why my eyes appear half closed

"

Half Closed

I have seen life come and watched life go

I was there for a birth and a man dying at a store

I saw my mom raise us without a dad

I watched her joy and as she tried to hide her sad

I held love in the palm of my hand

I cried when through the cracks it ran

I heard the cry of foreign people

I heard the toll of the towns steeple

I had gunshots go straight over my head

I slept with a gun in my bed

I saw a car wreck take a mans life

I had to break the news to his wife

I have been to a suicide one year to the day

That this young fellows girl up and went away

I have seen racism and experienced it first hand

I know that it matters not the color of a man

I left the church then I went back in

I hung with the boys and lived a life of sin

I had a problem sleeping alone

I wasn't choosey about who I took home

These eyes sometimes won't let me be

What’s the limit on what one should see

No one knows

Why my eyes are half closed

Why my lids appear swollen

Maybe it's a tribute to what's been stolen
