Ohana

Ohana

A Poem by Black Ink

Ohana means family
Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten
But it seems the meaning itself is being forgotten everyday
The people who I thought were my ohana, aren't
They expose rows of teeth and give each other love and affection
But they turn around and take their guns out aiming at me
They fire bullets of hurt, but
Not at me.
At they ones in our flower of family they so strongly despise.
And I hear every gunshot, every scream, every word of anger and aggravation
Why did it take so long to realize our flower is falling apart at the roots?
All of my elementary years I never knew what love was
What it felt like to belong somewhere
How it felt to not be on your toes ready to defend yourself all of the time
For the first time in my existence I got the chance to experience that
And turns out
It was all FAKE.
FAKE
Three years in middle school no one told me
No one said what they were tired of
And now our white, soft, but strong ohana hibiscus is stained red
Red for the pain'
The anger
The words being shouted to each petal
A storm itself occurred inside this delicate flower
Blowing away
