The Ghost of You

The Ghost of You

A Poem by Afayah

Swearing on the bible
I said it would never happen
That you and I would grow
To become the illusion we are now,
Where our affinity is nothing more
Than fortunate infatuation...
Renewable by the hour,
Stronger by the days.

And all our boundaries
Become a welcome mat
Inviting us to break them down
Proving that a physical attraction
Can equate to love.

But in the silence of our lonely minds,
When we really dissect the issue,
We begin to ask
If love is just our scapegoat
Or does it mean something so sweet.
So great,
So surreal...

Here I am claiming someone
Who is yet to disappear
After I awake from, yet again,
Another one of those dreams
Where I am the only existing woman
In his barren world.

Hurt is yet to come
Although the pain is already present.
I know very well
That my rigid heart will leak
Warm blood of sincerity
After or upon the moment
I am replaced by someone new.

In a frantic effort
To prevent the inevitable
I will, sooner or later,
Accept that he will never be the touch,
The kiss,
The love I yearn to feel...
And the memory of his existence
Will be erased.
