Why do you write?

I'll write a poem, I'll make it good

to earn reviews to light my mood.

I'll use the lines that sound so smart,

pretend they're true right from my heart.

 

I'll write a poem, I'll make it sad,

act like a victim of a heartless lad,

gather sympathies with tactful ease

in graceful verse with thoughts to please.

 

I'll write a poem, I'll make it rhyme,

condemn all free verse as a shameful crime.

I'll bribe my muses to disguise my words

in celestial rhythm to appease the lords.

 

I'll write a poem, I'll make it known.

To hundreds of fans, I'll have it shown.

They'd be impressed, thinking of a cause,

never suspecting I write for the applause.

I was so bored I had to amuse to myself with this kind of humor.

satirical sarcasm just right says i ... not easy to accomplish ... i imagine easily the mood that set you to this one Blue! of course i don't believe a word of it is confessional .. but you do hit on a certain truth about us all ... we want recognition, constructive criticism, some applause for sure .. and most of all a wide readership ... pity when those desires harm our writing eh!? i love your poem ..it has fine rhyme and rhythm ...i see this as one of the best bits of wisdom you share:
"I'll bribe my muses to disguise my words" ... as i am guilty of doing that all the time ....even when i try to be more plane ... i am ambiguous anyway ;} but hey .. c'est la vie ... one has to be true eh!?

Very good :D Although I generally write with true feeling, sometimes I wonder whether I deliberately melo-dramatize things in order to make them relatable or gain sympathy.

It becomes so intense sometimes that I'm not sure, because it becomes my reality, at least for that time period: I become the 'victim of a heartless lad'.

Love that ending.. could practically hear you laugh! There ARE smiles in this but also great thought to metre and use of words. Don't really think you merely write for 'applause' though .. but the word rhymes beautiful with 'a cause' - that's intelligent poetising!
