missing the past

Your sapphire eyes used to glimmer

comparable to the stars

shining, always shining,

with endearing boyishness

and childlike charm.

Your gaze used to make me blush

with its fiery intensity

burning, always burning,

melting away my mask

in careful constancy.

Your mouth used to promise a smile

an occasional delight

beautiful, always beautiful,

never failing to conceive

a loving sigh from my lips.

Your smile used to cost me my sleep

sweet seduction

irresistible, always irresistible,

flooding my mind

with such sensual sight.

Your voice used to shame the muses

when you said my name

loving, always loving,

song of my sanity

and lullaby of my life.

Your phrases used to be verses

of passionate poetry

heartfelt, always heartfelt,

sweetening sarcasms

and wrapping wit with wonder.

Your face used to hold the universe

a portrait of perfection

heavenly, always heavenly,

fusing reality and dream

in immortal union.

Your flesh used to feel like home

my familiar haven

comfortable, always comfortable,

where my temperature

blends in chemistry with yours.

You used to be my poetry,

my song, my dream,

my love, and my existence.

You used to be my everything,

my lovely sunrise, my lovelier sunset,

my every breath, my most beautiful memory...

You used to be mine.

But--

Months dissolved into moments

as familiarity gave way to estrangement.

What once was burning intimacy

turned to icy cold ashes of nothing.

Our love reached its summit

--and off it goes--

spiraling downward... unstoppable...

leaving fresh traces,

fresh scars of yesterdays...

leaving me forever holding on

to the fragments of

our used-to-be's.
