Chapter FiveA Chapter by AekmyOh no!!!!
I walked out of the detention room and put my stuff away in my locker. It was finally Friday, the end of our detention sentence, and I was glad. Gerard was doing to same. I wished he would talk to me. Maybe I could say something to him. I decided to be brave.
“I’m sorry about all of this.” I whispered.
“All I wonder is why. What made you do that to her?” he looked at me with an exasperated expression and left, shaking his head down the hall.
“Shouldn’t you know?” I yelled down the vacant hallway, but he never flinched once. I didn’t know. I thought about that on the walk home. Maybe I did it because of the anger inside me had been building up and now I just took it out on the first person that made me mad. I wished I hadn’t had done it. It was on my record now forever. I was so stupid and now my parents were going to figure out. The conversation with my parents was short lived and not very productive. I told them what she said and my mom got worried I was turning emo even though she had no idea what it was. My father told me well maybe you should pick your fights better. I knocked her out! I didn’t tell him that though. They took my cell phone away and locked me up in my room. I didn’t care; my guitar was in here so I’d just finish up a few songs. They didn’t come for me for hours. I figured my mother had gone to bed because it was just my father who came to see me.
“I already know what you’re going to do, get it over with.” I mumbled, I was like half asleep when he did all he wanted, so I wasn’t very responsive.
When I woke up Saturday morning I felt different. My head didn’t hurt, the bruises on back were there but didn’t hurt as bad, and the light shining through my window meant something. That morning I went upstairs and ate with my family, cleaned the house, played with jack, and laughed the whole time.
Gerard’s P.O.V
It was my parent’s anniversary today, Saturday, so they were home for the whole day. I was so glad they were getting a day off.
“I’m going to get the stuff for the food, mikey. Don’t burn down the house!” I yelled and walked out the door. I wished my phone would vibrate with Joey’s number and cute little face popping up on my screen, but in the last two weeks we hadn’t talked much. I decided she was probably just moody while I searched the store for all the stuff I needed.
I walked up to the counter and the cashier rang everything up.
“That’ll be twenty dollars and thirty-nine cense.” For the first time I looked up at her. She was gorgeous. Her eyes were deep chocolate brown and she had black hair. I had to shake my head clear before giving her the money.
“Thank you.” She smiled brightly, gave me my receipt and went about taking care of another costumer. That was awkward. I never act like that around other girls. Then again Joey is usually with me. I looked on the back of the receipt. She had written her phone number and a smiley with a phone to its ear saying ‘call me!’ it couldn’t hurt right? I mean Joey and I weren’t even going out. I pulled my phone out and dialed the number. She answered with a bright ‘hello, this is Casey.” Casey, why did it have to be so close to Candice? I looked back at the drug store and saw her waving at me through the window. Just one night.
After my parent’s party and stuff I walked back outside to the end of the street and met Casey. I had told every one I was meeting Joey; they believed me. Casey took me by the arm and pulled me along to a corvette. She was a lot taller then I remembered, finally I looked at her. Wow, Joe would never wear anything that revealing. She had on five inch pumps a fishnet shirt and a mini skirt. Her friends all looked the same. Though I didn’t know any of them I went along with it anyway.
“I’m so glad you could make it.” Her fingers played along my arm and she laid her head on my shoulder.
“Yeah, me too.” I muttered. Maybe once I got to know her it would be better. When the car stopped we were in front of a bar. Whoa. If we were here that meant she was like, what, eighteen? She pulled out a fake ID for me and yanked me out of the car with a smile. This would be a long night, but I figured a good one.
Mikey’s P.O.V
I have never seen Gerard drunk. He came back falling all over the place. The guys and I had to help him into his room and when he was finally sat down he kept mumbling about Casey.
“Who’s Casey?” frank asked.
“My date.” Gerard slurred and then toppled over.
“What? I thought you and Joey went out?” ray exploded.
“Nah, Jo-Jo wouldn’t do this. He dumped her. I just know it. Hey get a bucket for him!” Gerard was headed toward the bathroom before I could help it. He smelt so bad.
“Why man?” He was sitting on the edge of his bed, holding his head. It had been a long night.
“Why what?” he asked, thankfully he wasn’t drunk anymore.
“Why did you dump Joey?” she was going to be crushed.
“We aren’t, weren’t going out. Besides Joey’s no fun anymore.” He chuckled. Okay maybe he was still intoxicated.
“So you need to go out with a w***e now? You dumbass, do you know how crushed Joey will be?” I left his room and put my shoes on. I was going to see Joey. Gerard should come with me so I ran back to Gerard’s room. He was gone. Ugh. When I got back into the living room someone knocked on the door. If it was Gerard I was shutting him back out the door.
“Hey Mikey!” she squeaked. Joey’s cute little face popped through my dark day.
“Hey Jo-Jo.” Great.
“Where’s Gerard? I wanted to tell him sorry for what I did a couple of weeks or so ago.” she peered into the house.
“Out with his girlfriend.”
“Now what did I tell you about pulling junk on me like that?” she raised her foot but stopped when she saw my face.
“Joey I’m not messin’.” I looked down.
“What?” she looked so empty I just had to put my arms around her shoulders.
“He uh met her the other day at the drug store and they went out last night. He came home trashed last night. I like you a lot better.” I tried to smile but she didn’t.
“I shouldn’t be worried about that though. We weren’t going out. It doesn’t matter.” She fell into me anyway with her arms around my waist and I held on to her with the door standing wide open. I just held her. That’s all I knew to do. Gerard had been great to her, but he ruined it when he left her last night. I watched her phone vibrate in her back pocket. She hadn’t picked it up so I did. When I flipped open the phone a picture of Gerard kissing Joey’s cheek popped up. That was cute. I pressed send.
“Hey, Joey, babe.”
“I’m afraid she can’t talk right now.”
“Mikey?”
“Yeah Joey is crying her eyes out right now and probably won’t be done for awhile, no thanks to you.” I hung up. He would probably kick me for that, but it was worth it. It was for Candy.
“I wanna go home.” She pretended to be occupied with a button on my shirt. Her little fingers were sprawled across my chest.
“Can I walk you home?” I lifted her chin up and looked in her now empty eyes. They used to be so filled with life and spunk, but now they actually had a grey tint to them.
“It’ll be quite but sure.” She looked around for her phone.
“I have it.” I smiled, but she still didn’t.
“Did he call?” she didn’t even sound like she was asking a question.
“Yeah, I told him to go away.”
“You know mikey I wanna walk myself home.” I was afraid she would hurt herself.
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah.” She whispered. I watched her walk down the drive.
Joey’s P.O.V
I found my feet at the door and let them carry me down the drive. I didn’t even look back. How could he do this to me? It just wasn’t fair. The whole world felt like it didn’t have a meaning any more. If there was no life then what is the point in breathing? A red corvette swished past me; I expected to hear the sound fade down the street, but it stopped. When I looked side ways I saw Gerard’s frantic, teary eyes. I would have jumped into his arms in a second, but I had to stand my ground.
“Joey.” He whispered, dumfounded like a three year old getting caught sneaking into the cookie jar. A girl beside him clung to his shoulder and batted her eyelashes toward him. I couldn’t help but laugh. She looked like a total s**t. What had made him sink so low?
“Have fun.” I choked.
“Do you even know this girl?” the girl’s voice was so nasally. Gross. “She looks like a washed up nobody.” I chuckled.
“Thank you.” My voice was much more stable. “I appreciate it.” She looked at me weird and Gerard just looked at me.
“I guess I won’t be seeing you around much anymore.” I kicked a rock and started walking away. “Oh and don’t kick mikey.” I remdinded him.
The car sped away and stopped at his house. I watched him get out. Mikey was on the lawn walking towards him. Great these two will probably end up getting in a fight. Frank wrapped his arms around Gerard’s shoulders to stop him from running after me. Gerard looked at me, pleading for me to come back. I just shook my head and walked off.
When I got home my father didn’t say anything, of course, but my mother did.
“What’s wrong honey?”
“Nothing.” I just wanted to go to my room. She seemed to see it in my eyes and let me go. Once in my room I just sat on the bed and stared at the ceiling. My phone vibrated beside me. I glanced at it, then the ceiling. I didn’t want to talk to whoever it was.
Over the next week or so I hardly ate, again, my grades plummeted, and my father beat my even more, but one day I decided to go to Mikey’s. I hadn’t played my guitar in forever and I’m sure he was afraid I had died. No need to have two un-beating hearts. He was never usually there. I didn’t like to say his name much anymore, it hurt. The short walk down the street seemed to take even longer since I hadn’t done anything in so long. The guys were outside throwing something at each other.
“Whoa, bad!” I covered myself with my guitar case at the sight of flying dodge balls.
“Joey?” mikey asked. I just stood there. Duh, who else?
“Wow.” Frank couldn’t manage anything more.
“It’s nice to see you guys, too.” I walked up to mikey and half hugged him. He smelt like him and pizza. He hugged me back a little too hard, but hey when the dead returns mikey will be the one to send ‘em back where they came from.
“You look really different, Candice.”
“How so?” I asked. Mikey was leading me to the kitchen. I couldn’t help but look around the corner. Of course he wasn’t here, but a girl can dream (of having her heart squished by the only person who ever truly loved her or so she thought).
“When was the last time you ate?” ray asked. Mikey was still hanging on to me when Ray placed a piece of pizza in front of me at the table. My stomach turned. I pushed the food away and buried my face in Mikey’s jacket. I felt like I was going to puke, but there was nothing to come up. Yet minutes later, I was still bending over the railing of the back porch, practically puking my inner organs out. Mikey took one look at my stomach on the ground and grabbed the water hose.
“How long has it been since you have eaten?” he was washing it all down the yard.
“About a week.” I opened my mouth so mikey lowered the water pressure and rinsed it out for me. "or two."
“Why?” was he playing stupid?
“…” I didn’t want to talk about it. “I came over here to see if you wanted to play some chords.” I whipped my mouth inside and then walked towards my guitar case and headed toward the basement.
“Okay.” He followed. To my surprise it was just him who was behind me. When I walked through the basement doorway, I stopped. His s**t of a girlfriend and him were making out on the loveseat. He glared at me.
“Gerard! Get her out! I’m so not done!” his name sent tremors through my chest. There she goes again with her nasally voice. I turned around real quick, but Mikey stopped me.
“It’s my basement too. Just ignore him.” I did what he said and walked down the stairs. It was really hard to just act like he wasn’t there, no more then like six feet from me, but I did. I plugged my guitar up to the amp and helped Mikey. He pulled out my song book from my case and looked through them. They were all really depressing. I knew it, but he still kept looking through them.
“You have gotten really good.” He shook the papers in his hand and then shook his head.
“Past events made writing a lot easier.” He just nodded. Around half way through my warm up I realized what I was singing. It was mine and his song.
“I love you and you love me but we both know what will happen
If we don’t deicide who is the captain
Trying to salvage our love and
Roll it up like a rug,
Then your every smile haunts the distance
Between us our love isn’t enough, isn’t enough, enough?
To overcome the life; lived by many, enjoyed by few, except me and you.” I strummed one last chord and let a single tear slide down my face. He was looking at me the whole time. S**t star had left out the door to smoke. My fingers fell limp dangling over the side of the body of the guitar. Why hadn’t Mikey stopped me? Someone started clapping. I knew from a feeling in my gut that it wasn’t Mikey. It was him.
“You know that one’s my favorite.”
“Leave her alone.” Mikey swatted at him and helped me up off the floor where I was playing.
“Let’s write something for this one.” Mikey pointed to something about falling stars and screeching guitars.
“I wrote that one last night.” I tried to laugh and it worked. Maybe I could pull this off. I had planned on staying for awhile. He spent a minute looking over the lyrics.
“I like that one.”
“You like every thing I write.”
“C’mon Candice, who wouldn’t? You’re really amazing.” He lifted my chin and kissed my cheek. Now that left me shocked, but I shook it off.
“How do you want to start it off?” I asked. He chuckled as he left the room, with a beer cup in his hand. The next two hours went great. Mikey and I finished half of the instrumental parts of one song and started another. Around eight thirty I started to feel dizzy.
“c’mon, wake up.” He slapped my cheek lightly and jumped up. I ran after him. He kept going through the kitchen, but the rug on the floor deceived me. Thankfully Frankie was standing close and caught me or I would have fallen. I just laughed in his arms. He started tickling my sides.
“Stop it! Stop it!” he kept going. My lungs ached for air; sooner rather than later I couldn’t feel my tingling fingers. He started to slow when he noticed I wasn’t moving.
“Candice!” was the last thing I heard.
Gerard’s P.O.V
I had just gotten in the door from walking Casey home when I heard all of the guys yelling and kneeling on the floor over something.
“Candice! Can you hear me? Candice c’mon.” I heard Mikey say. Her name sent chills down my spine. Today she had played our song in the basement. She seemed totally shocked that she sang it, but to my ears it felt good to hear. I wonder what was wrong with her, kind of.
“Gerard!” frank came up to me and pointed toward Joey’s limp body on the floor. Every nerve ending in my body seemed to pull me forward. Before I knew it I was leaning over her, feeling her heart beat and jumping when I felt a pulse. I didn’t know what to do. Here she was dying in front of me and I didn’t know what to do. This had only happened once before and that was when her mom and I were on good circumstances. Surely, to no doubt, her mother hated me now. Suddenly the idea came to me. I leaned down and pressed my lips on hers and blew in her mouth. I did that pound on her chest thing and breathed in her mouth once more. After a few more times of this her color returned, so I stopped for a minute. Mikey felt her heart beat. Before he could have a breakdown Joey drew in one of the shack rattling breaths and sat up.
“Oh Joey.” Mikey held on to her like I used to. I just scooted back and watched.
“What happened?” frank asked.
“I guess I had an asthma attack.” She whispered and her lips were still blue. She leaned her head on Mikey’s shoulder and closed her eyes. For once I actually looked at her. God, she looked awful. You could almost see her ribs through her shirt, she never really had a chest to begin with and now it really looked like she didn’t have one, her hair looked thinner, her shoes were practically falling off her feet, and her jeans just covered what little meat on her bones she had left. Then I thought of what must be going on at home, with her dad and all. Now that she wasn’t seeing me she didn’t have anywhere much to go. She hadn’t been seeing Mikey much either.
“I thought you were gone.” Mikey whispered. He looked into her eyes and held her by the shoulders. The only thing my mind was registering right now was; you used to do that. Why don’t you do that anymore? You know she needs you? Why did you leave? My subconscious was beating me up good. It was trying to get me to feel for her again and it was working. Mikey made her smile and laugh. It was so genuine. She giggled a little and hugged him with all her might. Mikey kissed her on the cheek and she returned to gesture.
“Thanks Mikey, ray, and frank.” She looked down before Mikey picked her up in his arms and swung her in a chair. The look on her face was pure happiness. I had never seen that look in her eyes in awhile, but it all faded when she looked at me. Her face went white and her eyes cold. I managed a smile. She swallowed hard and struggled to move. It didn’t look like she had been breathing.
“Candice?” Mikey waved his hand in front of her face. When she didn’t respond he followed her gaze.
“I didn’t do anything to her, I swear.” I raised my hands above my head.
“You just stay away from her.” Mikey was up in my face.
“I suggest you stay down little brother.” I stood and put my chest to his.
“Mikey cut that out.” Joey whispered before fumbling toward him. Frank cringed in the back ground, but Mikey caught her like a feather falling from the sky. I guess she had a feeling I wouldn’t hit both of them. The way he looked at Joey made me think of what we had. She closed her eyes and smiled against his jacket. Maybe she didn’t realize who was standing right in front of her. Hello!
“Let’s go sit down.” Mikey dragged Joey along to the table and sat. I just stood there.
Joey’s P.O.V
Mikey sat down next to me with his arm around my waist.
“Thanks frank.” He had set a glass of water down in front of me, but I didn’t touch it. Apparently every one was waiting for me to pass out again because they were all sitting at the table watching me. I think I even saw, from the corner of my eyes, him watching me also.
“I’m not going to pass out again you guys.” I laughed. Frankie seemed to breathe more and Mikey just sighed beside me.
“You can’t ever do that to me again.” He poked my nose and I giggled. All the guys seemed to just watch. Mikey said ‘me’ like he was the only who cared about me.
“I should be getting home.” I twiddled my fingers in my lap. He got up and headed towards his room, slowly. Before he was out of ear shot I told him something…
“Thanks, Gerard.” I choked on his name, but he still heard me. My heart caught when his gorgeous face turned around to mine.
“You’re welcome.” He smiled, shoved his hands in his pockets and walked to his room.
The air outside cleared my senses.
“What was that?”
“I just said thank you. He saved my life didn’t he?”
“Yeah I guess.”
“Oh Mikey.” I leaned into his side and let him wrap his free arm around me.
“I like this.” He smiled his cheesiest smile ever.
“Yeah, I’m sure you do.” I listened to the birds. “Mikey why do you think he did it?” I kept looking forward as he looked at me.
“I don’t know.” Neither of us talked until we were in front of my house.
“Would you do something for me?” I pretended to occupy myself with a button on his shoes.
“Anything.” He was so much like a loyal puppy dog. I looked up toward his face and grabbed his eyes.
“Would you tell him I miss him? And that no matter what happens I’ll never stop loving him?” this question took him off guard. I still hoped he would deliver the message.
“Of course. Candice.” He grabbed my arm before I walked away.
“Hmm?” Mikey’s eyes seemed to tear up, like he knew what I was going to do.
