Gerard’s P.O.V
How the freaking crap am I supposed to explain this to her mom? I disregarded my own doubt and pushed the doorbell with Joey’s shoulder. It took her only a few minutes, and then she finally came to the door. Her face was horrified.
“Mrs. Parker my name is Gerard. I was walking with Joey and she started to do some strange things. I think she just fell asleep is all.” I looked down at her sleeping face. After I explained she seemed to know what was wrong.
“Of course, come in.” she opened the door wider and I walked in. ha, Joey must’ve been joking when she said her house was bigger than mine, this is huge!
“Just set her on the couch.” She ran off into the kitchen. Quietly, I slipped off my shoes and set her on the couch. Joey looked so breakable while she slept. Before her mother came back I slipped my hand over her neck and felt her pulse. My heart jumped. At least she had one, it was little, but she still had one. I pushed her hair out of her face and away from her lips. When her mother came back I was still staring.
“So…” she started dabbing at Joey’s forehead.
“Gerard.” I moved her hair again.
“Thank you. What happened? From the beginning please.” She smiled and it reminded me of Joe.
“Joey fell in front of my house so I came to help her up and she told me she was walking around the neighbor hood and asked if I would like to join her. I said yes, but after I ate. She stayed outside and once I was done I came outside, she asked me if I wanted to come help move you guys in and I said sure. We walked about a few blocks and then she started to act really weird. She walked father and she started fidgeting and looking behind her. Before I knew it she was on the sidewalk hyperventilating and then crying. I didn’t know what to do so I picked her up and walked down here.” Joey’s color hadn’t returned when I was done like I had hoped it would.
“Did she say anything while she was acting weird?” she got up to go to the kitchen.
“Yeah she said something like, ‘he’s coming to get me.’ It really scared me at first.” Joey’s arm twitched.
“Will you get her in a sitting position, Gerard? I’m getting her something to drink.”
“Yes mam.” I slid my hands under her again and propped her up like a little doll.
“Hey spider monkey, you okay?” I brushed the hair from her face again. She drew in a quick breath. It sounded horrible, like she had been sleeping for days.
“Don’t let him get me, Gerard.” Her eyes closed tighter; it looked like she was going to cry again. When she said my name it sent chills down my spine, but the good kind.
“I won’t.” I whispered and she found my hand. I squeezed it gently and she squeezed back. I let go when her mother came back into the room.
Diana’s P.O.V (Joey’s mother)
Wouldn’t Joey have told me if she liked a guy? Maybe she didn’t like him; maybe he was just really helpful. At least she had a friend. I was so thankful of him for that, for being her friend. When I walked around the kitchen and living room divider I caught him holding her hand. It actually looked like she was holding his, but I pretended to not see it.
“Thank you so much Gerard. You’ve been a great help, with this and just being Joey’s friend. She really needs it.” I smiled and began to tilt the cup into Joey’s mouth. Me being clumsy I almost spilled it, but his hands were there in a flash.
“I got it.” He took the bottle from me, smiled and tilted it to let Joey drink.
Joey’s P.O.V
My throat was so dry it hurt. I heard my mother’s voice, but I couldn’t understand what she had said. Gerard was by my feet, I could feel him. I drew in another quick breath and struggled to open my eyes. When I did he was retrieving the water bottle from my lips. My mother left the room to attend to jack jack’s cries. I swallowed hard and blinked slowly twice.
“Gerard.”
“Shh.” He hesitated before putting two fingers on my dehydrated lips.
“I’m sorry I scared you like that.” I whispered, muffled by his two fingers, and then smiled. This time I was sure my smile was genuine because he smiled widely back at me.
“It’s alright I think my heart rate has gone back to normal. Has this ever happened before?”
“It has been awhile.” I finished quickly before my mother heard. She walked in and sat on the couch with Jack. I reached for him and she placed him in my lap. I picked him up and swung him around best I could. Gerard came to sit beside me and reached for Jacky, too.
“May I?”
“Of course.” I handed my little brother over. Gerard was so cute with Jack, over the next hour or so my mother, Gerard and I talked over the matter. I would have to tell him the true story later.
“Gerard it’s like three o’clock. Shouldn’t you be getting home? You have a family, too. Won’t they be worried?”
“Yeah, I guess. Don’t let Jacky get lonely.” He grinned from ear to ear.
“I won’t, this little monkey is going to bed once you leave.” I gently snatched jack from Gerard’s arm and ran off to his bedroom. I giggled the whole way. Once I was in Jacky’s room I settled him down and quietly tip-toed out. Gerard met me at the door.
“He’s out isn’t he?”
“Yes. You wore him out! I can’t believe he even stayed awake that long. He must really like you.” I muttered and ran across the living room to fall on the couch.
Gerard’s P.O.V
Joey looked awful. Her face was paler than ever and her lips were all cracked. I wished I could make it better. She said she would tell me later what was really going on.
“Here I’ll walk you home, okay?” Joey put her jacket on and handed me mine.
“Are you trying to kick me out?” I laughed and watched her smile. When we were out of the house and into the street I could tell Joey wanted to talk, but didn’t know how to start.
“You can tell me anything.” I urged.
“My father, the one that isn’t here, is my step father. My original father passed away a few years ago. My mother thinks I’m still in a state of depression, but I’m not. My step father does things my mother doesn’t know about.” She looked down and took interest in her shoes.
“Like what?” I whispered, horrified of what the answer would be.
“When I don’t do something right…it gets nasty, though it did get harder once the other baby came around for him to do stuff. I can’t believe he tricked my mom and got her pregnant. He just wanted to stay together; she was thinking about leaving him.” Joey looked down before I could see her face. I stopped.
Joey’s P.O.V
Gerard stopped behind me.
“I’ve had four broken ribs, an ankle, and a broken knee.” Gerard looked horrified and didn’t say anything.
“It’s nothing. Gerard you can’t tell anyone, especially my mother. My father would kill me. And if you think I’m joking you’re wrong.” Gerard walked over to me, still speechless.
“What’s the most recent?” he had stuffed his hands in his jacket pocket, with is head down.
“I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Tell me.” He looked up into my eyes and suddenly Gerard looked well, violent and actually mad, like he had the first day. A kid who didn’t care what anyone thought. He was actually was starting to scare me.
“Gerard I have to get home and clean or…” I folded my hands in the other.
“Will I see you tomorrow?” he looked like he really wanted to see me, but I couldn’t trust him. Looks were as cheep as talk.
“I don’t know my father will be home tomorrow. Gerard I really have to go, my father will be home at five. It’s almost four!” I nearly screeched. I tried to make my eyes as less frantic as possible.
“Sorry.” He scanned me over one more time before I ran home.
Gerard’s P.O.V
I watched her run off. Her short hair flew back in her wind. I hung my head and started to walk up the drive. When I opened the door I saw mikey, ray, and frank all sitting on the couch watching some recorded crap for football. Mikey was the only one who followed me to my room.
“You look kind of down. What happened? Did she say no?” mikey was unbelievable.
“I didn’t ask her out. Besides I don’t wanna talk about it.” I looked away and plopped down on my bed and pulled out my sketch pad. A few minutes later Joey’s exhausted face had appeared on my paper. I smiled at it.
“She is really cute.” Mikey whispered with his head up toward the ceiling. He was sitting in my desk chair.
“Yeah and she’s funny. Girl has a sense of humor.” I smiled again.
“You know you can tell me just about anything.” He offered, looking at me shade a few things in.
“Yeah I just don’t wanna talk about this right now, maybe later.” I kicked my shoes off and closed my eyes. Mikey turned the light off on his way out.
Joey’s P.O.V
Once I reached the drive way my parents light way off, but the living room lamp was on. I was so dead. With a huge mound of courage I walked up to the door, opened it and walked in.
“Nice to you in the house.”
“Good afternoon to you, too.” My sarcasm wasn’t too thick, but if he kept this up…
“Where have you been?” he got up from the couch and stood a few feet from me.
“Here and there.”
“Where?” he stated, getting angrier.
“Down the street.”
“With a boy.” He finished my sentence.
“And which one of your five girlfriends have you been with?” It rolled off my tongue before I could stop it.
“I have been working the entire day and here I stand in a messy living room. I thought I told you to get this cleaned up when we were in the car?” my mind flickered back to that conversation my father and I had had while my mother was in changing Jacky in the gas station bathroom. He had pulled my hair and yanked my face into his; he said it helped me listen better.
“I just…” I was at loss for words.
“You better be glad your mother just lay down or I would lay into you.” He threatened.
“Love you too.” I muttered.
“Excuse me!” he put his finger in my face.
“It was nothing.” I backed up into the door and slid my fingers around the handle, just in case.
“Yeah nothing, so what is this!?” he swung the back of his hand against my cheek and part of my lip. I resisted the urge to cradle my cheek. Blood started to make its way into my taste buds.
“You’re awful.” I gritted my teeth towards him and turned the knob. My legs carried me far enough to hide in the bushes. After a moment a climbed through my window and grabbed a few things, and then I was gone again. While I ran I heard him yell outside. My feet and heart carried me as far as I could go. When I stopped I was in front of Gerard’s house. Ugh. I bet he was asleep, but maybe mikey wasn’t. Humph. Before I could make a decision I was running from my fathers headlights. Fortunately he didn’t see me duck behind the trees in Gerard’s yard. I would have to thank him for that later. I licked my lip before knocking on their door. Gerard actually answered. Sheepishly I just looked down.
“Who is it?” I heard mikey yell in the back ground. “Is it the pizza guy?”
“Go around to the first window.” He closed the door and I snuck over. His hand was sticking out of the window when I found it. I took his hand and he pulled me in.
“I really do hate to bother you. I was running from my father.” His room was messy, but I found his bed and sat down.
“No problem. It’s nice to see you again.” He smiled wildly and I couldn’t help but laugh.
“You’re ridiculous.” I closed my eyes and hummed a little tune. I was surprised at how well I just settled down into his house. Gerard found his own way over and shoved almost everything under the bed and in the closet, from what I heard, and sat down next to me. His hands were brushing back my wind blown hair. Little spurts of excitement swam inside me. I smiled in my tune.
“You like that?” he asked and laughed small-ish.
“You made my song happy, obviously, so I had to pick up in tempo.” I peeked through one eye and found him staring at me.
“Why are you so interested in my appearance?” I asked, joking mostly, but he thought a minute before replying. I pulled my knees up close to me and hugged them.
“You have something about you, but I can’t figure out what it is. I don’t know. You just seem so sure of yourself. It’s different.” He smiled again and wrapped a strand of hair around my ear.
“You’re messed up in the head. Something isn’t right with your brain.”
“There’s nothing wrong with my brain. Whoa what happened to your cheek?” he pointed at my face like it was a big zit. I didn’t say anything. After a minute he figured it out.
“I didn’t mean to ask questions.” He looked down at my fingers, they were terribly dry.
“It’s all right. I get it all the time.” I jumped up and set my bag by the door and took off my shoes. I stretched my fingers to the ceiling then down to my toes. Gerard just sat back with his hands behind his head and watched. I must’ve been wearing a tight shirt. Great.
“Are you thirsty?” he asked when I yawned.
“Ah, no you don’t have to get me anything.” I plopped down beside him on the bed and looked around on the floor.
“Hey what’s this?” I picked up a worn out sketch book and looked at the front. Gerard’s hand was on mine.
“I’m sorry. Is it alright if I look inside?” I made my eyes like a puppy dogs.
“Prepare to be disappointed.” I looked inside. The sketches were beautiful. Angels and hearts, crosses and anime people danced along the pages. The next picture jumped out at me. I was positive it was me. The eyes and hair looked exactly the same. I looked up at Gerard, whose cheeks had turned ten shades of red.
“Who is this?”
“It’s you.”
“I look awful.”
“You were sick earlier, remember?”
“The rest are beautiful, but you should consider taking this one out. Compared to the others I look ugly.” I made a face towards my own before he took it and laughed.
“You’re absurd and there is something wrong with your brain.” We both laughed. An arms length of space was between us. I twirled my finger around his bed sheet.
“What are you thinking about?”
“Why I'm here.”
“Well I thought that was obvious.” He leaned back on one hand.
“I meant with you.”
“Do you not like me? Like at all?” His question caught me off guard. Of course I liked him. Who wouldn’t?
“You think I don’t like you? You’re insane. If I didn’t like you I wouldn’t be here. What I don’t understand is the fact that you like me. Or at least it seems that way.”
“I do like you. Actually I like you a lot. You’re really cool in a lot of ways.” He smiled. I turned thirteen shades of red and looked away, biting my lip. I twirled the bed sheet in my fingers again.
Gerard lifted my chin with his pointer finger and looked in my eyes and then kissed me. At first I was in total shock and he could see that. He was gentle at first, but started to lay into the kiss and then into me.
Gerard’s P.O.V
Joey just sat there at first, but once I laid into the kiss she wrapped her arms around my neck and twisted her small fingers in my hair. I moved her into the middle of the bed and wrapped my hands around her waist. She was really starting to get the hang of it, but she started to squirm so I let off, but kept my face inches from hers.
“You have to let me breathe.” She gasped for air and coughed but I couldn’t figure out why.
“You have asthma?”
“God, you’re squishing me, just lift up a bit!” She put her hands on my chest and tried to push me up; I gave in.
“Do you have asthma?”
“Yes. Okay. I give up. Yes I do and it sucks. So there.” She closed her eyes and let her hands spread out like wings behind her head.
“There’s nothing to be ashamed of. You are right though it does have its set backs.” I whispered before kissing her again. I grabbed her wrists and held them there; this time I tried not to squish her as much. Joey lasted much much longer.
Joey’s P.O.V
Gerard was an amazing kisser, that’s all I had to say. He was on top of me with his knees trapping my hips, but I pulled my feet out and pulled him down. I giggled before I turned over on top of him.
“You think you’re good.”
“I know I’m good.” I smiled and rested my head on his chest.
“You tired?”
“Yeah you wore me out.” I closed my eyes while he shifted me off of him instead and actually covered me up. The lights had been off for a while.
“Gerard, you know this isn’t right.” I looked up at him and instead of replying he pecked my lips.
“Yeah, but you can’t go home.” He started playing with my hair.
“I have to. Since my mother likes you so much maybe you can come over, but not as well whatever you are right now.” I chuckled and snuggled closer.
“Your mom likes me?”
“Yeah, thinks you’re great.”
“Oh yeah, so what am I right now?” he chuckled.
“A very nice smelling, animated pillow, what kind of cologne do you use?”
“I don’t.”
“No person should smell this good.” I played with a button on his black shirt.
“Well I guess I’m just special.”
“In more ways than you think, Mr. Way.” I kissed his lips and tried to get up, but he pulled me back on top of him.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
“Just let me sit up.” he did, but he kept his hands on my legs. I breathed in deeply and sighed.
“You know I have to go home.”
“Not if I kidnap you.”
“Then my father will really hate you.” We both laughed.
“Can I at least walk you home?”
“Of course. I’m really going to miss you.” Gerard let me get off of him. I got my bag and shoes on before jumping back through the window.
Gerard kept his arm around my waist the whole way to my house. Once we were able to see the house he let go of me, but grabbed me again into a bear hug. I hugged him back. A fear tears trickled down my face, but I had to push him off. When I walked off I saw him standing in the street.
“Gerard I’m really sorry, but you know I can’t stay in your arms forever. I’ll try to see you tomorrow.” I whispered and ran up to my window. He finally walked off, head forward.
