Last night I was channel surfing and I ran into an episode of ‘The Universe’ on the History Channel (wonderful show, by the way). Anyway, the episode was was called, “Sex in Space” (I’m still wait for the highly anticipated episode dealing with pigs) and it was described to cover this;
“As man moves to colonize the cosmos, the realities of sexual relationships and reproduction need to be addressed. Probe the physiological, psychological and cultural challenges of sex in space. From the sex act through birth, look at how the extreme environments of space exploration might effect copulation, conception and developing human tissues, as well as how issues around sex might impact the emotional lives of astronauts. Get to the bottom of the rumors to find out if space sex has already happened, and look at how the burgeoning space tourism business may soon lead to a boom in space sex”.
One comment I caught was made by some expert in psychology who said concerning a three year mission to and back from Mars, “It is unrealistic not to deal with the issue of intimacy between individuals on such a mission...a same sex crew will not work...a crew of already paired married couples will not guarantee success...human beings need intimate contact...to touch in order to be a normally functioning human being.”
Thinking about this I’ve come to the conclusion that I would be perfect for a three year tour to Mars. Not only is it my favorite place in the universe that I would like to visit, but considering my already dysfunctional state, I already have a head start on the whole “lack of intimate contact” thing. What’s three more years going to be that’s anymore different then my present state.
